Women in Beer takeover at ‘The Sports Bra’

Portland’s women of the beer industry in the Pink Boots Society are teaming up with The Sports Bra for a showcase of beers with the 2023 Pink Boots Hop Blend from Yakima Chief Hops. On Sunday, April 23rd, the sports bar in NE Portland will tap six collaborations by over a dozen local women in the beer industry.

Threshold Brewing & Blending collaborated directly with The Sports Bra on one of the beers: Bra Code rice lager with Makrut lime leaves. Sports Bra owner Jenny Nguyen came out to Threshold for the day and learned some brewing ropes. The 5.5% abv beer was even canned for the event, and like the other beers tapped on Sunday is hopped with the YCH 2023 PBS hop blend.

One-year-old biz The Sports Bra made national news as the first all-women’s sports bar, serving primarily drinks by other women owned, ran, or made-by businesses. The tavern is full of new, vintage, signed and autographed memorabilia from local and national womens sports heroes, and televises national women’s sports games and replays others when new ones are not showing.

Since first opening in April 2022, Sports Bra owner Jenny Nguyen has consciously populated their extensive beer list with women-brewed beer from local breweries. Including Heater Allen, Culmination, Steeplejack, Von Ebert, Breakside, Threshold and more.

The Pink Boots Society was launched in 2008 to assist, inspire, and encourage women and/or non-binary individuals in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry to advance their careers through education. This Sunday, the Portland chapter of Pink Boots Society is taking over the Sports Bra taps with from 3-9pm with PBS Hop Blend beers and many members in attendance.

What is the Pink Boots Society hop blend?

Each year Yakima Chief Hops partners with the Pink Boots Society for a special seasonal hop blend. PBS chapter members across the world incorporate the blend into spring releases brewed around International Women’s Day. This year’s blend consists of Loral®, Ekuanot® and HBC 586 hops. Proceeds from the sales go to the Pink Boots Society in providing education and services for the small but growing segment of the fermentation industry.
