Son of Man releases Spanish made Basajaun Cider in Cans

Cascade Locks, Oregon based Son of Man Cider has released a new cider straight from Spain called ‘Basajaun.’ Though born and operated in the pacific northwest, Son of Man produces exclusively Spanish-style all natural ciders like their flagship Sagardo. For their latest release Basajauan, they teamed with a small husband-wife ciderhouse in Zerain, Spain called Oiharte and packaged for the first time in tall boy 16oz cans

.

“Maite and Haritz, the couple producing the cider, grow all of the apples they use for cider on their own farm. This cider is made entirely with indeginous Basque apple varieties,” says Son of Man founder Jasper Smith.

Working with his Spanish partner Guillermo, Smith was able to find a cidermaker and mobile canner willing to package and ship this special limited cider release that has all the flavors of a traditional Basque cider without all the funk.

“Flavorwise the cider is everything you'd want or expect in a Basque cider, but is undoubtedly cleaner than a lot of the cider that makes it Stateside from Spain,” says Smith

Basajaun reportedly has more of a slight acetic vinegar like kick from the naturally occurring lactic acid producing bacteria native to the Spanish ciderhouses, which makes it more acidic than Son of Man’s regular gorge made cider. But Basajaun has no wild brettanomyces yeast present in it, which leads to the cleaner and more shelf stable flavors and mild spritz of this release. The lack of “brett” and authentic apple juice used yields a noticeable saltiness and slightly lower carbonation which especially calls for the signature Sidra-style long pour from vessel to glass to really rouse effervescent bubbles into your glass - don’t drink this from the can!

Basajaun is available now in the Portland metro-area via self-distribution, home delivery or mail order at https://www.sonofman.co/
