Headless Mumby Brewing’s Craft Lagers now available in cans

Olympia, Washington’s 2 year-old all-lager brewery Headless Mumby has packaged their first beer and will be releasing Local 66 American Lager at their taproom and in the Olympia area this week. More beer runs will follow, with deliveries heading up to the Seattle and Tacoma areas next.

“It’s going pretty great over here in the Headless Mumby world. We packaged our first run of cans (60 cases) this past Saturday in one of the smoothest days I’ve experienced in a packaging realm,” says taproom and sales manager Victoria Martens.

Headless Mumby purchased a Gosling model canning line from Wild Goose in an effort to relieve the stress caused by COVID-19. As a previously draft-only brewery with a small tasting room and no outdoor seating, Headless Mumby had to think fast and purchasing their own equipment rather than bring in a mobile canning company made sense in the long-term.

“The first beer we are focusing on is our Local 66 American Lager. This beer was created to support organized labor and workers rights as we ourselves are a member of Local 66,” says Martens.

Local 66 Lager is 4.8% abv and brewed with all German pilsner malts and flaked rice. Lightly bittered with all whole cone German Magnum hops and finished with a touch of American Liberty hops.

Headless Mumby will follow their initial can release up with Smoked Rye Lager. This classic but underappreciated style is brewed with 20% Beechwood smoked malt and 30% rye malt, with an array of German specialty malts for complexity. All the hops used are whole cone German Perle.

Mumby self distributes throughout the Olympia/South Sound and Seattle markets. The first run of Local 66 Lager is on sale now for to-go only from their taproom with the current restrictions in place. Hours are Tuesday - Sunday 2pm-6pm. We also offer online ordering for curbside pick up: https://headlessmumbybrewing.square.site

The nitial run of cans will be available at the taproom as well as local Olympia accounts such as: Vic’s Pizza, Old School Pizza, Oly Taproom, Spud’s & 507 Taproom (Yelm, WA). The next run of cans will go to the Seattle and Tacoma area with Smoked Rye being canned later this January.

HEADLESS MUMBY STORY:

Co-owners, Keith and Alex, had named their respective home breweries ‘Headless’ and ‘Mumby’

‘Headless’ is a salute to the song “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner” by Warren Zevon, of whom Keith is a rabid fan.

‘Mumby’ is a reference to a defunct logging and shingle mill from the early 1900s which operated in the area Alex now lives.

Once Keith and Alex had made the fateful decision to join forces and open a brewery, they were faced with the daunting task of naming it. They decided, what better way to represent a truly collaborative effort than to unite the names of their home breweries? And, so it was.

Combined, the name ‘Headless Mumby’ is a slight nod to the Pacific Northwest lumbermen from days past who often had to organize and strike against greedy corporate heads… or whatever.
