Migration Brewing Rooftop at the Canvas building reopens in downtown Portland
Migration Brewing’s Rooftop at the Canvas building in central southwest Portland was one of the few respites from pandemic and politics related pressures of summer 2020. The temporary pop-up style rooftop taproom offered a break from the real life stress points and a picturesque view of downtown Portland and the gorgeous skyline as proof that the city wasn’t burning despite what some right wing media would lead you to believe. Now it’s reopening for the first time in 2021, and will become a permanent Migration taproom location.
The open air Migration Rooftop sits on the 9th floor of the newly constructed Canvas Building across the street from the Timbers and Thorns stadium Providence Park. The shiny steel building provides a mostly unknown spot to people watch with the sounds of a roaring Timbers army crowd in the background during games, even with the very limited capacity. It’s also going to make for a prime happy hour and post-game spot if you can find it, the building is non-descript and the entrance on Yamhill takes you to a lobby and elevator that are not obviously clear that you are heading to a brewery taproom and that might be for the better.
As the rooftop gained more recognition last summer it could become a hot ticket, so it’s recommended to get there early or get your name on a list. They do take same day reservations but ONLY for parties of 6 can be made by email info@migrationbrewing.com
Light snacks like cheese boards, chips and jerky are available, but don’t expect a full menu as it’s the roof of an office building and there is no kitchen. And that may be part of the reason that the Rooftop remains 21+ only, that and beers and food can easily go sailing off of the waist height barrier around the space as the wind occasionally kicks up.
Also to be aware of, this is an almost entirely outdoor and uncovered space, though an awning of some kind is in their future when the weather turns again later this year. For now there is a small glass area you enter the taproom into which has the small counter service bar, a selection of cans to go and some very limited seating. A new massive TV has been installed that you can sit around and watch games, perhaps streaming a Timbers game with the real crowd noise rising up just out of sync with the stream.
Migration Rooftop at the Canvas is street parking only, but it’s conveniently just a block from the MAX line stop and a few blocks from Burnside where many buses stop. The proper building entrance is at 1750 SW Yamhill. The taproom will be open 7-days a week from 1pm-9pm.
