Oregon brewers had no problem handling the competition at the 2021 North American Beer Awards (NABA). Considered one of the most prestigious, and largest, professional beer competitions in the US, the NABA’s are presented by the Idaho based non-profit North American Brewers Association since 1997. Last weekend master brewers, certified judges, and professional beer journalists from across the country gathered in-person for the double-blind competition and awarded Oregon breweries 79 medals.

10 Barrel Brewing shared this image of their medal haul on instagram

10 Barrel Brewing came out on top at this years NABA mounting an extremely impressive hall of 18 medals between their 3 Oregon brewing locations, and that’s not counting another Silver medal that their Boise, ID location snagged. Of their Oregon medal haul, 6 were golds, 7 were silver, and 5 were bronze. The Portland location of 10 Barrel with it’s own brewery team lead by Whitney Burnside won 5 of those medals independently from the Bend operations which speaks volumes of that pubs quality.

Breakside Brewing mounted a strong case that there massive wins at the Oregon Beer Awards are not a hometown hero fluke, as they dominated the NABA’s too with just one less medal than 10 Barrel for a total of 17 wins. Of those, 8 were gold medals, 4 were silver, and 5 were bronze. Although the brewery was just below 10 Barrel’s total haul, Breakside claimed more gold medals than any other brewery this year at the NABA’s.

Bend/Central Oregon area breweries overall had the best showing with 39 total medals. Sunriver Brewing coming in with the second most in the region adding 5 to the count. Deschutes Brewery and Worthy Brewing came in next with 3 medals each. After that Three Creeks Brewing, Bend Brewing Co. and Monkless Belgian Ales added 2 medals each to the total. Finally, that was rounded off with single medal wins each for Boneyard Beer, Cascade Lakes, Wild Ride Brewing, and Goodlife Brewing,

Portland area breweries brought home 35 total medals with Von Ebert Brewing coming up with the third most medals of any Oregon brewery with 5. Following another standout year for Von Ebert, the quickly expanding Migration Brewing showed that they are growing not only in size but in world-class quality as well with 4 medals this year. Zoiglhaus Brewing, Oregon City Brewing, and Ecliptic Brewing brought home 2 medals each. Ex Novo Brewing, Ancestry Brewing, and StormBreaker Brewing added 1 medal a piece to the total.

Also of note:

  • Pelican Brewing continued their prestigious legacy with 3 more medals.

  • ForeLand Beer won what was probably their first judged competition medal with a Bronze for their Rain Harvester Saison, a nod to rewer/owner Sean Burke’s roots as a brewer for The Commons.

  • Rain Barrel Ciderworks, a small lesser known cidery in Baker City, OR won a medal for their Hazy Guava Cider.

  • Elk Horn Brewery was the only operation in the Eugene area to win a medal with a Silver for their Stoopid Simple coffee stout.
