Portland Craft Beer Seminar Series
There are three different seminars happening during Portland Beer Week this week, they cover the challenges of COVID-19, the historic art of cask beer, and the still developing techniques and tastes of fresh hops. Best of all, you can enjoy a beer at one of the cities best breweries while learning about it.
Monday, August 23rd 5pm @ Migration Williams
The first seminar of the series is today on the back patio of the new Migration Brewing location on N. Williams. This is also the only vaccination required event, and it’s fittingly about the future of the craft beer industry after and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This discussion will bring together entrepreneurs in the craft beer industry who are creatively tackling these challenges head on.
SPEAKERS:
Ben Parsons, founder of Baerlic Brewing
Casey Armstrong, founder of Road Beers & Function
Colin Patrick Rath, founder of Migration Brewing
Jeff Alworth, journalist behind the Beervana blog and The Beer Bible, will moderate the panel.
Breweries were forced to lean into their direct relationships with their customers, whether it was via email or social or delivery. It was a BIG difference from the way restaurants handled it.How did COVID change their business, future projections, and possibly even their ideas about the industry related to trends, retail, and wholesale. What mistakes were made, what did they learn, what kind of adjustments are they making for the future.
Tickets are only $10 and include a pint of Migration Brewing beer.
Thursday, August 26th 3pm at SteepleJack Brewing
Cask beer has gotten a bad wrap in the past for being your grandfathers beer, served at higher temperatures than most are used to and with less carbonation it contrasts with what the macro corporate breweries tell you to like. But brewers have long been fans of “real ale” that is closer to a living and natural expression of malt and hops that you can get. Lately it’s having a little bit of a moment, and at this seminar four different local brewers who are passionate about the tradition will be on hand to both pour their own and talk about the results.
The brand new SteepleJack Brewing will host the seminar and head brewer Anna Buxton will lead the discussion. She welcomes Alex Ganum of Upright Brewing, Van Havig of Gigantic Brewing, Marshall Kunz of Away Days Brewing, and Ryan Buxton of Ex Novo Brewing, all who will have their own cask pins of beer to pour.
Tickets include your first pint of cask beer and a take home glass for only $12!
Saturday, August 28th 5pm @ Zoiglhaus Brewing
Just about everyone loves a good fresh hop beer, and being in the pacific northwest we have a unique perspective and opportunity to brew these extremely seasonal and terroir based beers using undried and fresh from the bine picked hops. At this seminar last years Oregon Beer Awards fresh hop gold medal winner Alan Taylor of Zoiglhaus Brewing, will host colleagues Sam Pecoraro of Von Ebert Brewing and Ryan Buxton of Ex Novo Brewing who will bring their own fresh hop beers to the tasting. The brewers will be waxing poetic and digging into the details about the how, why, when and where on brewing with fresh hops. The seminar runs from 5-8 pm at Zoiglhaus Brewing Company
Tickets are only $10 and include your first pint of Fresh Hop beer.
