The 2021 New Oregon Breweries Showcase

The New School is proud to present the return of our annual New Oregon Breweries Showcase on Tuesday, August 24th at Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom on SE Division in Portland as part of Portland Beer Week (August 20-29th)


For 5 years running the New School has gathered togethe new breweries from across the state of Oregon for a tap takeover introduction to Portland. Last years event would have been held at Bailey’s Taproom but both the showcase and the bar became casualties of COVID-19 in 2020. This year we are excited to help introduce 10 new breweries that debuted right before or during the pandemic, some that you may have heard about and others that have never even poured beers outside of their own taprooms. Our new venue hosts at Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom have a more spacious outdoor street seating option to keep this event safe and as socially distanced as you are comfortable with.

On Tuesday, 8/24 starting at 3pm we will tap 20 new beers from the participating 10 breweries at Imperial. There are no tickets necessary, beers will be on draft and available in taster, glass, pints and Imperial Pint size pours. We highly recommend you show up between 4 - 7pm for meet-the-brewer/owners when we expect to have everyone from each brewery in attendance, some pouring samples and talking shop. This is the time to support new and small craft breweries!

Gratitude Brewing

Gratitude Brewing opened a few months before the pandemic hit. The Eugene startup was founded by longtime friends Tristan Cooley and Josh Cosci who secured a smooth transition from their locations former brewery Sam Bonds Brewing into the casually colorful and playful beers that Gratitude has developed a following for. Cosci has spent years working on his brewing skills in the Bend area at Three Creeks Brewing, Worthy Brewing and Immersion Brewing and at Gratitude he has gained a following for his hazy and fun fruited sours, one of which he won an Oregon Beer Awards medal with and will bring to the new breweries showcase.

Mt. View Brewing

Just a hop up the hill from Hood River is one of the gorge’s two new breweries: Mt. View Brewing. Founded by, and on, the estate of Mt. View Orchards which also produces their own Grateful Vineyards wine and Golden Row Ciders. This beautiful and rustic property has a modern winery tasting room that now showcases all three brands with views to the vineyard and gorgeous Mt. Hood. Read all about Mt. View Brewing right here.

Mutantis Brewery

The multi-award winning founding brewer of Seattle’s Ghostfish Brewing has moved to Portland and started a craft gluten-free brewery and bottle shop in north Portland. Jason Yerger was a bay area homebrewer when he discovered he was gluten intolerant, now he has dedicated his life to brewing creative out-of-the box beer styles with innovative gluten-free techniques and will make you re-evaluate this area of craft beer. Shimai-Toshi Brewing

Japanese influenced, but locally brewed Shimai-Toshi Brewing is a brand brewed around unusual citrus. Their flagship beer is Yuzu Lager, which you may have seen in 16oz cans around Portland or at their primary market of local Ramen and Sushi joints that exemplify the culture. Shimai-Toshi co-owner Ian Marshall is a citrus farmer in Boring, OR who’s signature fruit is Yuzu and much of the ingredients are grown there but brewed out of Zoiglhaus Brewing in outer southeast Portland. New Spring Brewing

One of the best things to come out of the pandemic started off as one of the worst. Last June, Corvallis, Oregon’s acclaimed and fan favorite Flat Tail Brewing was forced to shutter after a leasing dispute. Despite the curveball and double-whammy of a pandemic shutdown and loss of their longtime home, owner Dave Marliave did what he always does and bootstrapped his brewhouse to a new home in Albany and reopened as New Spring Brewing. Now the distribution only brewery drops a double can release onto the eager Willamette Valley and Portland area populaces every few months and it’s quickly snapped up. Kings & Daughters

Kyle Larsen and his wife Kacie wanted to start a more delicate hop forward beer brand with feminine touches inspired in part by their son and two daughters, what they came up with was Kings & Daughters Brewing. Envisioned as a Hood River brewery in the future, Larsen has taken up the role as head brewer for the fresh new small contract brewing operation Back Forty Beverage in Clackamas, Oregon and is now launching his first official beers as Kings & Daughters from their brewhouse. K & D first previewed their beer with a much buzzed about collaboration with Larsen’s former employers at Trap Door Brewing in Vancouver, WA but will officially be launching their own product in the coming days and weeks. Foreland Beer

ForeLand made a splash when they debuted in late 2020 ahead of opening a taproom in McMinnville. Founded by former Von Ebert and The Commons head brewer Sean Burke, Foreland specializes in regional specific hop centric pales and classic and nuevo lagers. Their 16oz cans found around Portland have been a hit, and their reception earned ForeLand the Best New Brewery award at the 2021 Oregon Beer Awards. Crowing Hen Brewing

The pandemic opened Crowing Hen Brewing presents like a farmhouse winery but brews like a more balanced slice of approachable craft beer Americana styles. Located a short drive from Newberg and McMinnville, this family run brewery opened during the pandemic and has not sold their beer outside of their own taproom until now. Self taught farmers and brewers, Crowing Hen is also building their own on-site hop farm and working with local growers on special varieties.

Working Hands Beer

Hood River’s newest brewery got to brewing last year during the pandemic with a focus on lagers and IPA’s. Founded by former Ferment Brewing lead brewer Kasey McCullough who has teamed up with Slopeswell Cider to produce both brands under the same roof. Working Hands have slowly rolled out a handful of classic and fresh styles in cans from Helles and Pilsner to a Cold IPA. SteepleJack Brewing

You have probably already heard about the new Portland brewery opened in a 110+ year old church in the Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood. Probably the most anticipated brewery of the year is run by two female lead brewers who are stretching out into a wide breadth of beer styles from saison and table beers, to hazy IPA and cask mild ale. If you haven’t had a chance to visit them, or would like to meet the brewers in person than this is your chance.
