Chuckanut Brewery releases Doppelbock and Grodziskie

Ahead of the Valentine’s weekend Chuckanut Brewery has released two fun throwback beers that we don’t see nearly enough of on the west coast these days: Doppelbock, and a traditional Grodziskie (aka Gratzer.) You can now enjoy either of them at Chuckanut’s new Portland taproom P-Nut or at their Burlington, WA production facility.

Doppel is double or two in German and Chuckanut’s double bock is made in honor of Valentine’s Day. This batch of Doppelbock being tapped on February 12 for Valentine’s Day weekend at both locations was originally released in February 2021 and held for one year in refrigeration. It’s a rich, dark, heavy lager and a treat for anyone who likes Bock style beers or full flavored lagers.

Chuckanut Doppelbock is extra strong, dark brown in color and originally aged at least 8 weeks at 29°F in fermentation tanks. Having aged for over a year after it was finished makes this full flavored lager deceptively smooth. With lots of chocolate, toffee, dried stone fruit flavors Chuckanut Doppelbock has a 7.4% ABV. Fair warning, watch out–—it’s dangerously easy to drink! This year Doppelbock is only available in very limited quanitities on draft at P. Nut in Portland and South Nut in the Skagit Valley. Doppelbock is a great combination with rich foods. It can hold up to braised & roasted meats & any rich sauce! Or enjoy just for the beauty and flavors it imparts, prost

Grodziskie Polish Lager has been brewed by Chuckanut Brewery once again. This light colored, slightly smoky effervescent lager is very unusual and rarely brewed in America. The style uses oak smoked wheat malt giving it a very light color, soft body and a dry finish. Grodziskie is known as the Polish champagne because of the tiny bubbles and lightness of body in this style of beer.

Chosen by beer writer Stan Hieronymus in 2021 as one of the best 10 beers to drink in the US it’s slightly different than other Grodziskies brewed in the US. Chuckanut’s version is a balance between malt and hops and comes in at only 3% ABV. Delicate smokiness tantalizes the taste buds but does not over power them leaving room to quench your thirst. Available on draft at accounts around Puget Sound and Oregon. Cans of Grodziskie are available only at Chuckanut’s P. Nut (Portland) and South Nut (Skagit Valley). Hope you like it, cheers!
