Van Henion Brewing opens a swanky new taproom
One of 2022’s best new breweries is opening their first in-person location today in Bend, Oregon. Van Henion Brewing is by some of the former all-star brewers behind Boneyard Beer Co. who have now branched out on their own to open a new brewery with a swanky but intimate tasting room experience on Bend’s northeast side nearby Bridge 99 Brewing and the 10 Barrel Brewing East Side production facility and brewpub.
Opened by former (read: past) Boneyard brewers Mark Henion, John Van Duzer, and Dana Henion, the new Van Henion Brewing specializes in crisp lagers and clear IPA’s from an outsized production facility that once produced tens of thousands of barrels of beer a year for Boneyard. The expansive operation was designed to feed kegs to accounts across the west coast and has capacity to spare, which in some ways is perfect for Van Henion’s time intensive large batch lager projects like their flagship Helles and Pilsner. For all the massive amounts of space to brew, they didn’t have a public facing area until now.
Repurposing Boneyard’s former merchandising area next to their offices, Van Henion Brewing has done a lot with a little. In an intimate 455 sq. ft space they have turned an office corner into a swanky and plush vision of a taproom that feels more like a vintage cocktail bar.
Sourcing many of the oak tables and cushy chairs from a vintage antique store in Prineville, they have decked it out in decorative fuzzy forest green wall paper and vintage German memorabilia. Drop down hanging orb lamps from the 70’s bathe the space in warm fireside lighting creating cozy dark corners to sink into over a pint and some conversation.
“I wanted to create a space that people would feel comfortable staying for a while,” says Dana Henion. “I was going for cozy, warm, and retro. All our seating is super comfy, no metal barstools here. Because we are a lager forward brewery I also wanted to add some German inspiration and decor. So we added cuckoo clocks, German beer mirrors, and beer steins. “
The bar seats are limited, but if you pull up a stool you may be treated to some brewing stories and an authentic Black Forest Swiss clock that looks straight out of a pub in the alps. The lineup includes 7 taps for draft beers, a full selection of their beer and cans, and one Sandy Lily Sparkling Wine on draft from a Van Henion brewer who also makes the wine.
As of opening the Van Henion Taproom is 21+ and does not serve any food. In the future they plan to build out a patio and have regular food trucks. Their current taplist: Helles Lager, Kolsch, Pilsner, IPA, Brother Vans IPA, and Sandy Lily Sparkling Wine.
