24 Oregon Breweries join Kōkua Project collaboration benefiting those impacted by the Maui Wildfires
The craft beer industry has again proven that time after time they will rally to support worthy causes, Maui Brewing’s The Kōkua Project collaboration beer has 24 participating breweries from Oregon alone. Inspired by similar cause based collaboration beer projects like Sierra Nevada’s Resilence project of 2018, the Kōkua Project is a response to the devastating wildfires that broke out on the island of Maui in August 2023.
FEMA estimated that over 2,200 buildings had been destroyed, mostly residential homes, in the wind-driven fires that caused widespread damage and loss of life in the town of Lahaina on Maui’s northwest coast. Crucial infrastructure, historic landmarks, not to mention the massive devastation to the ecosystem, wildlife, and people of Maui, is estimated at a cost of nearly $6 billion.
The Kōkua Project is one beer, brewed by many, to support our Maui ‘Ohana who have been affected by the tragic wildfires. The recipe is a session IPA brewed with Waimea and Mosaic hops, with a target abv of only 4.2% ABV, but participating breweries are putting their own spins on it for various interpretations with the same cause. Maui Brewing has provided the recipe, brewing instructions, labels, art, marketing collateral and merchandise kits to make it as easy as possible for breweries to participate. More than 700 breweries across the US and internationally have volunteered to brew Kōkua and pledged to donate the proceeds to the Global Empowerment Mission, the nonprofit organization that is facilitating the Maui Brewing Company Fire Fund.
Kōkua, translated as “extending help to others” in the Hawaiian language, is coordinated by Maui Brewing Company and inspired by Sierra Nevada’s Resilience project of 2018. Kōkua is a Session IPA that delivers a refreshing wave of tropical hop aroma atop a delicate malt base.
