2018 World Beer Cup Medals by the Numbers

The 2018 World Beer Cup was held last Thursday, May 3rd and we recapped the ceremony and winners with stats and photos here. Today we bring you a bit more analysis of the numbers, courtesy of our man John Lovegrove. For this article's sake we will focus on U.S. breweries in this international competition, specifically Oregon and Washington with notes on top medal winners country-wide and top states for medal counts.

American breweries from 39 States won medals at the 2018 World Beer Cup.
California, Colorado and Oregon dominated with 44, 28 and 23 medals altogether.

Top Breweries based on medals won:

  • Firestone Walker won 4 medals, 3 from Paso Robles and 1 from Buellton locations.
  • Beachwood Brewing won 4 Medals, two from Long Beach and two from Huntington Beach.
  • Figueroa Mountain Brewing won 3 medals, one each from Arroyo Grande, Westlake Village and Buellton.
  • Pinthouse Pizza won 3 medals, 2 from Burnet and 1 from South Lamar locations.

The following states won atleast five medals: 

  • California 44
  • Colorado 28
  • Oregon 23
  • Pennsylvania 11
  • Texas 11
  • Michigan 10
  • Ohio 10
  • Washington 10
  • Florida 7
  • Illinois 7
  • New York 7
  • Wisconsin 7
  • Indiana 6

  • Virginia 5
Nevada won 4, but Revision Brewing in Sparks, NV deserves recognition for winning Gold in the super-competitive American-Style IPA category (377 entries) and Silver for its Double IPA (196 entries).
"Beer Town USA" Asheville, NC won two. That's cute guys, nice try.

OREGON:

As I have noted previously, Breakside Brewery often dominates competitions but you are seeing quality rise overall and medals spread out further between states and breweries with less dominance. Still, Breakside won 3 medals, 2 from its Milwaukie location and one from Slabtown.
Logsdon Farmhouse Ales and Old Town Brewing won 2 each, as did Three Creeks Brewing in Sisters, Oregon, one each for its two locations.

WASHINGTON

To our north Washington breweries won 10 medals.
Bellingham (Washington's answer to Bend, OR) deservedly won 4 of the 10 medals. Chuckanut Brewing won two Gold medals for its Kolsch and Pilsner. Chucakanut Kolsch also took Gold at last year's GABF. Aslan Brewing won Gold for Frances Farmer saison. Boundary Bay won a Bronze for Old Bounder barleywine.
Seattle's Georgetown Brewing is racking up wins for its Gusto Crema Coffee Beer, it also took gold at GABF in 2016.
Barrel Mountain Brewing in nearby Battle Ground won Silver for its Starway Stout.
