New Oregon and SW Washington Breweries and Cideries Showcase

The New School's only regular annual event, the New Oregon Breweries Showcase, is returning on Monday, June 11th to Bailey's Taproom with a twist--this year will include some SW Washington breweries, as well as a cidery or two in the lineup. This event serves as an annual Portland Beer Week spotlight for new brewers not just from the city, but from across the state and region. Some of these you have no doubt have heard a lot about, and others not a peep. Being as The New School is dedicated to covering new breweries and cideries, this event is right up our alley and one of our favorite annual functions. This year's event, slightly renamed the New Breweries and Cideries Showcase, features eleven breweries and cideries with two beers or ciders from each. The event kicks off when Bailey's Taproom opens on Monday at noon, but come in from 5-8pm to meet-the-brewers/owners of these lovely new operations, as well as some of The New School crew such as myself. There is no cover, no presale, no special glassware to buy or reservations to make, just bring yourself in for a beer or hard cider and pay-as-you-go. Stay tuned for a full taplist for this event, but these are our participating breweries and cideries with a little info about each one.

Xicha Brewing - Salem, OR

A new Latino-owned and operated brewpub in Salem that we have been stoked about since first hearing and writing about in early 2017 before it opened. Founded by acclaimed Latino chefs and with the brewhouse from the now-defunct Fire Mountain Brewing, we hear these guys are putting out some great beers and bites, but have yet to try them ourselves. I believe this will be Xicha Brewing's first appearance outside of Salem.

Allegory Brewing - McMinnville, OR

One of my favorite breweries to open in the last year is Allegory Brewing. These guys showed up onto the scene without much word and little fanfare, but with a serious pedigree of Charlie Van Meter behind the kettle, an alumnus of Logsdon Farmhouse Ales and Yachats Brewing. The owner, David Sanguinetti, also founded and runs The Bitter Monk, McMinnville's great beer bar. So far Allegory Brewing has shown an incredible range, from farmhouse and wild ales to IPAs, stouts and lagers. The brewery also just expanded taproom hours for the summer and added a terrific pizza truck pop-up.

Dirty Pretty Brewing - Portland, OR

What's old is reborn anew in the new Dirty Pretty Brewing, a new startup from brewer Carston Haney and restaurant/bar group ChefStable. You may remember Carston from his time as Alameda Brewing's head brewer in its golden years, and recently for the short-lived Ross Island Brewing. Now Haney has teamed up with ChefStable's Kurt Huffman to rebuild the startup as a new brand called Dirty Pretty, which has already been providing beers to Chef's Stable properties like Loyal Legion Beer Hall.

Dwinell Country Ales - Goldendale, WA

Opened last year in the tiny rural farming town of Goldendale, Washington (just north of The Dalles), is a new brewery that focuses on farmhouse and wild ales. The brewery and taproom is a modern operation in a town full of locals who mostly drink Coors Light, but owners Justin Leigh and Jocelyn Leigh are not dumbing down their interesting beers. Some of the beers they are making include raw wheat and dry-hopped saisons, goses with housemade syrups, and farmhouse ales with grass straw. Check out our interview with Dwinell's Justin Leigh.

Barsideous Brewing - Lebanon, OR

Barsideous Brewing opened in late 2017 as the second brewery in Lebanon. Bill Bartman, a high school music teacher and homebrewer opened Barsideous with his brother and nephews in a 100+ year old historic theater. Barsideous is a full restaurant and pub with 2.5 bbl brewhouse and beer styles that range between Scotch ales, Belgian, and double IPAs to stouts and imperial stouts, blonde ales, and pale ales.

Grains of Wrath Brewing - Camas, WA

You probably have already heard about Grains of Wrath, the brewery from former Fat Head's Portland head brewer Michael Hunsaker. Already acclaimed for his bold west coast style IPAs, Grains of Wrath makes some damn good German-styles as well and has a top notch pub. One of the most anticipated openings of the last few years, Grains of Wrath is one to watch and a new destination in SW Washington.

Level Beer - Portland, OR

Another one of the more well-known breweries on this list, Level has been open nearly a year now. The outer northeast Portland brewery was co-founded by Bailey's Taproom owner Geoff Phillips and because of the three tier system, the beers could not be served at Bailey's until recently. Co-founded by brewers Shane Watterson formerly of Laurelwood and Jason Barbee formerly of Ex Novo, Level Beer specializes in west coast beers but also makes some great lagers, saisons and more.

12 Bridge Ciderworks - Oregon City, OR

This hard cidery and taproom opened up about a year ago in Oregon City and produces some interesting fruited ciders like a black cherry flavor or interesting combos like cranberry-pomegranate and passionfruit and blueberry. The company sells most of its cider in-house so I am looking forward to trying more of the flavors for the first time at Bailey's.

Second Profession Brewing - Portland, OR

This new Portland brewpub opened in the former BTU Brasserie space last October. Owner Charlie Goman comes from the IT trade show world, but here he takes his homebrew acumen to his dream profession. Second Profession makes vaguely German-style beers as well as classic pub stables, west coast and hazy style IPAs. Most of the beer is sold in the brewpub on NE Sandy Blvd, so it should be interesting to get a taste of what the brewhouse is making 8 months after opening.

Von Ebert Brewing - Portland, OR

Opened just a couple of stone's throw from Bailey's, Von Ebert Brewing just opened its doors at the end of March, but it wsa operating much earlier. Von Ebert is the former Fat Head's Portland location with a rebrand, new beers, new food, and new direction. With two former alumni of The Commons Brewery, the style of beer has shifted from majorly hoppy to farmhouse and German stuff, without leaving the IPAs behind. Von Ebert is even working on a second location that will focus on sour beers and German lagers.Stay tuned for the actual beer and cider taplist next week...Facebook Event page for updates here: https://www.facebook.com/events/588637514847702/
