Barrel-Aged Beer Advent Calendar Day #1: Sunriver Brewing Haole at the Moon & Mi Case es Su Casa

The holidays are upon us and it's a time for strong, spicy, barrel-aged beers with enough oak to stave off the chills from awkward family interactions.

As we count down the 24 days of December leading up to Christmas, we are highlighting one barrel-aged beer each day. View all of the beers on this year's Barrel-Aged Beer advent calendar after they have been posted at https://www.newschoolbeer.com/category/ba-adventcalendar

Sunriver Brewing is known primarily for its masterful hoppy beers and multi-award winning Fuzztail Hefeweizen, but you don't want to sleep on the brewery's stouts. You literally won't be able to sleep after having the new Mexican Mocha-inspired BA stout, one of two barrel-aged Imperial Stouts released on Friday.

Sunriver Brewing has pulled off a magic trick by turning three beers into two beers with the release of Haole at the Moon and Mi Casa es Su Casa. How did they do it? By blending three different beers together and then adding special spices, flavors, adjuncts unique to each. Both beers started off as a blend of non-barrel-aged Imperial Stout, with a bourbon barrel-aged portion and a third part chocolate milk stout.

Both new beers will be available in 16oz cans exclusively at Sunriver Brewing's three pubs in Bend, Sunriver and Eugene. And can we pause for a second and wonder at the new world we live in where you can purchase a 16oz can of 12% ABV Barrel-aged Imperial Stout at your local brewpub?

Haole at the Moon is billed as a "Hawaiian Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout." This version is inspired by a chocolate bar from the Hawaiian islands. The brew team layered in lactose, toasted coconut, Maui cocoa nibs and macadamia nuts.

Mi Casa es Su Casa is the Mexican Mocha-inspired iteration. On top of the three stout blend, they have added more lactose, C4K coffee, vanilla, ancho chilies, cinnamon, and Mexican Ghana cocoa nibs. It's said to be loaded with bold flavors, both sweet and hot, smooth and spicy, earthy and roasted.

Get down to one of your friendly Sunriver Brewing pubs (Sunriver, Bend, Eugene) while you can.
