Zoiglhaus Brewery is in the center of the universe for outer southeast Portland's Lents neighborhood and is now the center of the social distancing party. Zoiglhaus is throwing a parking lot cook out called the Zoigl-Lot Brew N' Q every weekend Fri., Sat., and Sunday from 4 to 8pm with weekly barbecue specials, draft beer on tap and hazy IPA "Hopsicles."

"In an effort to promote social distancing while still offering great food and beer, we wanted to bring the party outside. We will be setting up a BBQ and beer garden every weekend in our spacious parking lot" says Zoiglhaus and Ascendent Beer Co. brand ambassador Jason Frischetti.

Zoigl-Lot Brew N' Q

Zoiglhaus's spacious parking lot provides room for chef Cesar Villaroel to grill out each weekend with an evolving menu featuring everything from ribs, sausage, and smoked wings to tacos and corn succotash. For the kids, there is hot dogs and sodas with plenty of room to space out and still leave room for parking.

Villaroel is a 20 year veteran of Portland's culinary scene with stints at Le Pigeon, Papa Hayden and Bread & Ink Cafe. As a child, Villaroel learned to appreciate BBQ and how to process meat from his father who was a butcher. With his house smoked wings and elote topped short ribs tacos, Zoiglhaus and their chef is proving as adept at Texas barbecue as they are at German-style food and beer.

General Manager Andrea Kelsey and Villaroel develop the food menu each week, trying out new things and bringing back favorites. Check Zoiglhaus social media for updates on that week's special menu. One thing that has remained consistent is the side of slightly smoky baked beans and the creamy potato salad that come with each plate. If you can't go to a real backyard party this summer, Zoiglhaus is there for you with their parking lot hangouts. Though the setup here is sparse (a handful of tables and tents), they are filling it out and refining the experience each week with the occasional live band or DJ.

But hopheads may be most interested in the beer "Hopsicles" created by Frischetti. The recipe for these frozen beer popsicles change from week to week, but always use Ascendant Beer Co.'s Awesome Sauce Hazy IPA as a base. Frischetti uses yogurt, cream and fresh fruit to create a fruity, creamy, and plenty hoppy Hopsicle for adults-only. This week they will be trying out a new Hopsicle with strawberry and basil added.
