An Oregon Coast Sea Monster inspired Rogue Ales Colossal Claude Imperial IPA
Rogue Ales & Spirits has completed the overhaul of their year-round lineup with the new regular release of Colossal Claude Imperial IPA in 12oz cans. Beginning in 2021, Colossal Claude, will become a brewery mainstay filling the hop bomb niche alongside Batsquatch Hazy IPA and Outta Line West Coast IPA in an upcoming Monsters of IPA campaign. Claude is a northwest IPA with big citrus and floral hop aromas on the nose and finishes a touch on the bitter side with plenty of soft pine and resinous hoppy notes.
The myth of the Colossal Claude dates back to 1934 when a 40’ ft. sea monster was spotted by a mate of the Columbia River lightship. It was reportedly seen through binoculars by crew members who watched in for some time. Then nearly 30 years later in 1963 the Shell Oil Company actually spotted and recorded a video of a 15’ ft. creature swimming in 180’ ft of water off the Oregon Coast that matched a similar description. Colossal Claude is supposed to be 15-40’ feet long with a serpentine like round and tan body, with a horse or snake like head, and an 8’ ft. neck.
“It’s been a few decades since a Colossal Claude sighting has been reported, but we’re fairly certain the massive sea monster has been laying low off the coast of his favorite brewery,” says Joel Shields, Rogue Brewmaster. “Word has it that after years of terrifying sailors and feasting on salmon he acquired a taste for hops. So we brewed this Imperial IPA with a colossal dose of Cascade, Chinook, Citra and Strata hops in hope of coaxing Claude out to join us for a pint.”
