Ex Novo Brewing expands Rotating Sour series with Scarlet Starlet in 12oz cans

Portland and New Mexico’s Ex Novo Brewing is expanding on their sour beer series in 12oz cans with the new Scarlet Starlet. Over the years Ex Novo has canned kettle-sours like Cactus Wins the Lottery, Marryin’ Berries and Puff Puff Passion.

Cactus Wins the Lottery is a kettle sour berliner-weisse with prickly pear that was originally released in 11oz bottles, now in 12oz cans seasonally.

The first addition in 12oz cans was Marryin’ Berries, a jammy fruited gose with Raspberries and Marionberries. It’s been a popular Springtime crusher that has been released in April.

Puff Puff Passion, is Ex Novo’s tart dry-hopped sour fermented with Passion Fruit. Look for it in the Fall/Winter months of the year as things begin cooling off.

In an effort to always brew for the season, Ex Novo wanted to add one more sour to the lineup to round out the year. They landed on Scarlet Starlet, a kettle-soured ale with sweet and tart cherries. Medium-bodied, with a balanced and sweet pie crust-like maltiness, clocking in at 6%.

As with all of the 12oz sour beers, Ex Novo tapped comic book artist Jonathan Case for the label design. Case has worked with the brewery since the beginning by painting the Rosie the Riveter mural at the original Ex Novo location on N. Flint in Portland.

Scarlet Starlet releases in early October, bumping Puff Puff Passion to the early months of the new year. The first canning run will happen at Ex Novo’s newish Corrales, NM production facility, this Friday, 10/2, and the PNW will see cans around the second week in October.

Below is the annual release calendar for the series. Look for Scarlet Starlet to begin replacing Cactus soon!
