Ex Novo Brewing teams with Powell’s Books on City of Books IPA
Portland’s Ex Novo Brewing has teamed up with one of the nations best book stores: Powell’s Books. The collaborative effort has resulted in City of Books IPA, a co-branded beer brewed to support independent bookstores and booksellers across the country.
To support independent bookstores and booksellers across the country, 10% of proceeds from the City of Books IPA will be donated to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc), a nonprofit that helps bookstore owners, booksellers, and comic store employees and owners with unforeseen emergency financial needs.
Of the City of Books IPA, Ex Novo Brewer Ryan Buxton says: “We discussed different options for styles of beer, but when you live in the Pacific Northwest we all know that IPA is king. We wanted to make a splash with this beer and knew it had to be special. We landed on a 6.2% ABV West Coast Style American IPA. We wanted just a touch lower ABV than your typical IPA to make it easy to drink more than one or to sip on while enjoying a good book.”
On October 16, 2021, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. you will be able to buy your very own 4-pack of this exclusive, limited-edition beer at Powell’s Books’ downtown location on W. Burnside will be hosting sales of the beer ($15.99 for a 4-pack of 16 oz. cans) Quantities are limited and expected to sell out fast, so beer and book aficionados are advised to show up early!
Please note:The City of Books IPA is not available for purchase on Powells.com. In-store purchases are limited to two (2) 4-packs (single cans are not available). Beer cannot be consumed on the premises.
Limited quantities of the beer will also be available at Ex Novo’s North Portland and Beaverton locations while supplies last.

Ex Novo Brewing opened its doors in the Eliot neighborhood of Portland, OR in 2014. Our mission was simple, to brew great beer and to use our business as a platform for good in our community and across the globe. Our mission has always been to donate 100% of net profits to organizations building a better world. We have since expanded into three locations: Portland, Beaverton and Corrales, NM (home to our Founder, Joel Gregory), and have built some incredible spaces for you to try our products at the source and fully embrace the Drink Beer, Do Good culture. Additionally, we have been able to donate almost $100,000 back to our community, charities, and global efforts so far, and thank you for your support in these efforts.
