Gigantic Brewing refreshes Catch 23 and Most Most Premium RIS Barrel Aged Varieties for 2021

Portland, Oregon’s Gigantic Brewing Company has released new versions of their Catch 23 pale and the 2021 vintage of Most Most Premium Russian Imperial Stout in multiple barrel-aged varieties. Both beers are indicative of Gigantic’s relentless push to keep things fresh on both established and new beers, not staying stagnant but constantly refreshing each recipe like an operating system with the latest update.

Gigantic began their barrel-aged Imperial Stout program in 2015, aging the original Most Premium Russian Imperial Stout beer in bourbon
barrels. “Originally inspired by Russia’s favorite expression for great, Most Premium, once we barrel aged the beer, we knew we had to use
proper Russian grammar, and name it Most MOST Premium”, says Gigantic co-founder Van Havig.

The 2021 Most Premium Russian Imperial Stout has been aged in 5 barrel varieties for ultimate complexity:

  • Bourbon: Enjoy notes of cocoa, coconut, caramel, umami & a delightful vanilla bourbon warmth. We blended beer aged in Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels.

  • Rye: A delightful blend of chocolatey + cinnamon and peppery spice with a subtle woody character. The more pronounced booziness, this varietal was aged in American rye whiskey barrels.

  • Port: With distinct woody, dark red fruit notes, we aged this in real Portugese port barrels.

  • Scotch: A hint of smoke, delicate dry woody notes, strong malt backbone and a mild sweet spiciness, we aged this varietal in a blend of Islay and Highland whisky barrels.

  • Rum: Notes of chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar, and a very distinct fruit cake cherry notes resulting in the most fruity varietal of the bunch, we aged this batch in Caribbean rum barrels.

Catch 23, otherwise known as the Shark vs. Eagle vs. Bear battle royale label returns re-imaged this time as an IPA. The original Catch 23 was a pale ale using experimental hop codenamed 527. But apparently 527 had no future and is no longer being brown. So instead of the original recipe Gigantic is bringing it back but taking it up a notch as a stronger and hoppier showcase of the brand new experimental Hopsteiner X13459 hop. It’s known for having a sweet citrus, tropical, floral, peach and berry aroma and flavor. This also begins a new tradition that will see a new version of Catch 23 IPA brewed every year using a new experimental hop each time.

“To us, this beer is a blend of the old and the new. There’s an early 90’s floral influence, plus the intensity of modern beers. It tastes like a great combination with the past and the present,” Master Brewer Van Havig says. We welcome you to experience the nostalgia with floral aromas while drinking a deliciously punchy pint of PNW style IPA.
