Threshold Brewing & Blending, the younger of two Montavilla neighborhood breweries in outer southeast Portland, is gradually reaching out of the confines of serving the thirsty locals in the confines of their tasting room. Known for their hazy IPA’s and love of barrel-aged beers both clean and wild, Threshold Brewing is now canning up larger batches of flagships like Day Runner hazy IPA and Roma coffee stout and self-distributing them to Portland area bottleshops and in the coming days will expand their taproom hours from the limited evening windows of time to broader service times with the hire of their first employee Abram Beckelhymer.

Threshold Brewing improvements began in the winter when indoor seating was shut down due to COVID. The taproom had already added a comfortable parklet in front of their building just around the north corner off of SE Stark on 78th ave. With the addition of awnings that come out from the building to provide shade and respite from rain the seating options have been improved.

In February Threshold announced a partnership with pandemic startup Road Beers to deliver their beers to homes and offices within 15 miles of their NW location. Since last spring of 2020 the brewery had been making their own deliveries when they could, which was difficult considering the brewery is a two-person show between husband and wife team Jarkek and Sara Szymanski, the handoff of delivery means more time for brewing and distribution.

This marks perhaps the most significant change for the brewery, the hire of their first employee, a Montavilla local named Abe. Already a beer industry pro, Abe grew up east of Whidbey Island in Mukilteo, Washington and comes to Threshold with a 3-year production brewing stint at Mukilteo’s Diamond Knot Brewing Co. A fan of spontaneous fermentation and oversized dogs, Abe will be starting at the taproom this weekend and allowing for the introduction of expanded hours.

Threshold Brewing & Blending’s expanded taproom hours:

4 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

4 – 9 p.m. Friday

3 – 9 p.m. Saturday

12 – 6 p.m. Sunday

Location: 403 SE 79th Ave, Portland, OR 97215

Food: Threshold Brewing does not have a kitchen, however the fine local restaurant/bar Redwood delivers their delicious food straight to the taproom. The brewery is also hosting regular pop-ups and looking for ways to keep Polish Zapiekanka and other European treats on hand.
