Proper Pint Oakroom

The second location for Proper Pint taproom has opened in SW Portland’s Multnomah Village area. Proper Pint Oakroom is a small curated beer bar from Sean Hiatt, an industry veteran who previously had long stints with The Civic Taproom before opening up his own place the first Proper Pint in the SE Woodstock area. The Oakroom was one of our most anticipated pandemic delayed openings in 2020.

Oakroom is the front triangular corner business of a new building standing at SW Capitol Highway and 32nd. Erected on the location of a former old time gas station, just one fuel pump remains on the small patio as a strange but fun nod to what came before. The building itself is a little funky but clean and bright with shared restrooms between the buildings tenants and big bright windows to take in the neighborhood. Just across the street is Lucky Labrador Brew Pub and John’s Marketplace and the new Level Beer taproom are within a few blocks.

Hiatt is a woodworker, a craftsman who takes it upon himself to build much of the furnishings in both of his taprooms. With the Oakroom there is still work to be done finishing bar stools and custom tables that share a theme with the centerpiece back bar. At first glance the wall behind the taps looks like a carefully painted mosaic meant to look like stained glass, but on further inspection it is actually a ten paneled stained glass mural that Hiatt built himself.

Initially Hiatt approached one of two Portland shops specializing in stained glass to custom build the back bar piece, but they were backed up as far as 8 months so he decided to take on the project himself with no experience. After watching 30 hours of youtube videos and overcoming a huge learning curve, Hiatt went about the hard way of gold foiled and soldering the impressive piece together over 200 hours. Where it’s placed now against the back walk-in cooler it appears as a wall, but as the day darkens the stained glass is lit up from behind with LED strips.

Oakroom keeps two cooler doors of hand selected more high-end bottled and canned beers for there or to-go, and 18 draft lines. Rather than increase the amount of draft beers Hiatt opted to pair them to a manageable level that promotes high turn over of kegs. 11 of the taps are dedicated to beer, 1 of those is a nitro tap, 3 handles are for ciders and 4 are for wines. The space is 21+ indoors but allows children outside. They do not serve food, but have plenty of local options to bring in eats and the taproom is working on a partnership with the local restaurant Jay’s Hut to put QR codes to order their food to the bar directly.

Proper Pint Oakroom is soft opened at 7654 SW 32nd Ave Portland Or 97219 from Monday - Thursday from 2-9pm, Friday - Saturday from 12-10pm, and Sunday from 1-9pm. They also will be a serious Timbers viewing bar with memorabilia and 4 flat screens to catch the game on.
