Chuckanut Brewery celebrates 1 Year Anniversary at Portland taproom

Bellingham, Washington founded Chuckanut Brewery opened their Portland location the “P-Nut” taproom one year ago, and are celebrating the first anniversary on Friday, December 16th. The occasion will be marked with raffle prizes, a food truck, and a very rare Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout release in highly limited half liter bottles.

For the one year anniversary Chuckanut has hand bottled up a version of their Export Stout aged in whiskey barrels. For Chuckanut this is a rarity, their lineup focuses on lagers with few ales in-between and even less strong and dark beers. There have only been a handful of barrel-aged beers in their history. Owing to the proximity of Chuckanut’s main brewery in Burlington, Washington to Westland Distillery’s barrel house next door, they sourced one of their Peated (ashy smokey) whiskey barrels to age the stout for one year. The beer boasts an impressive spirit forward nose, with hints of wood, and dried cherry. High gravity lends itself to a very rich and velvety mouth feel. The palate is generously rewarded with hints of chocolate, coconut, licorice, and dried cherry.

Chuckanut has produced just 120 bottles of the Whiskey Barrel-Aged Stout for sale between their two taprooms for $28 each, with a limit of 2 bottles per person. The half liter bottle size is equivalent to 16.9 oz, and includes some unique packaging embellishments like gold wax dipping that they think will make it a valuable addition to beer afficionados cellars that holds up well from it’s 9.2% ABV.

Starting at 4pm during the anniversary celebration on December 16th, Chuckanut will welcome their regular pop-up food partner Farmer and the Beast for smashburgers at the pub and patio until they sell-out. Pacific Ice will also be on hand with specialty smoked fish. Raffle prizes will award brewery swag to customers.

Over the summer and fall Chuckanut P-Nut began experimenting with hosting local events like Rauchfest, May Day, Oktoberfest, Harvest Fest, and other low-key beer events. They have also began filling the walls with local art from artist Ursula Brown, and a mural by Nori Rinaldo which serve to liven up the space between the vintage beer signs and old newspaper clippings paying homage to Chuckanut’s storied history.

Chuckanut P-Nut is located just around the corner from Baerlic Brewing Pie Hall and a few blocks from the new The Beermongers, and is one of the best places in the pacific northwest to drink arguably the most acclaimed and prolific lagers brewed in the pacific northwest. The quiet taproom often gets overlooked on the dark side street off of SE Division, and the one year anniversary is a great reason to check it out or revisit and see what’s new. Currently the P-Nut taproom offers 11 Chuckanut beers on tap, wines, ciders, sodas and canned cocktails from Straightaway Cocktails.

Chuckanut Brewery brews award winning Lagers and Ales and has won Large Brewery of the Year at WA Beer Awards 2017, 2019 and 2021 and Small Brewery at the GABF 2011. The production facility and Tap Room is in Skagit Valley at 11937 Higgins Airport Way, Burlington, WA. Chuckanut Brewery’s P. Nut Beer Hall is at 920 SE Caruthers St, Portland.  Both locations welcome guests of all ages and have indoor and outdoor seating!
