Threshold Brewing & Blending debuts new biodegradable packaging and edible beer spreads

Portland, OR’s on the rise Threshold Brewing & Blending is adjusting to the new normal with innovative responses to both exciting and troubling trends. As a small young-ish brewery in southeast Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood they have been quick to stay current and relevant while also struggling with issues any small brewery does in making their packaged beer available to their fans and finding new audiences. Adapting and and staying ahead of trends is a proven strong suit for Threshold’s owners and husband-wife team Sara and Jarek Szymanski and their latest moves into biodegradable beer bags and edible beer spreads is cutting edge stuff.

Threshold Brewing’s new environmentally friendly beer pouches replace packaging in cans

Aluminum shortages spur switch to new alternative packaging

“We’ve really been feeling the aluminum can pinch since the outset of the pandemic – supplies are short and costs are rising,” says head brewer Jarek Szymanski. Starting today, April 1st, 2022, they are introducing new sustainable packaging in response to those mounting supply chain issues and challenging aluminum shortages. Threshold Brewing is proud to announce a move to new environmentally conscious and 100% biodegradable packaging for their entire craft beer line-up.

Effective today you can find their IPA’s, lagers and even specialty barrel-aged beers in convenient pint-sized compostable pouches that deliver on flavor AND good vibes. Advanced testing indicated zero leakage or product compromise for up to 3 days, and they believe they can get that number closer to 4 in the coming weeks.

“The future of packaged beer is bright!” says Jarek. “People are definitely used to drinking their beer from cans but we think environmentally-kind pouches are at the forefront of where the industry as a whole is headed. I actually expect to see pouches almost exclusively lining local beer aisles in the very near future.”

Threshold Brewing’s beer spread ‘Smores Helper’

Edible Craft beer Spreads

Local artisans have been infusing beer into everything from soap to beard balm for quite some time. But Threshold is one of the first to jump on the latest new trend - Craft Beer Spreads. Just in time for the summer camping season the brewery is transferring the essence of some of their most popular flavored beers down to delicious edible dessert spreads that go terrific on a cracker, biscuit, toast, or even graham cracker!

S'mores Helper is Threshold’s decadent coconut imperial pastry stout reduced down to the consistency of sludge and then painstakingly aged in whiskey barrels. Its 20% high-octane ABV will have you adulting hard at your next fire pit S'mores night (although proximity to flames is admittedly problematic). Comes with child-proof seal.

“The craft beer industry has been an explosion of innovation over the past 2 years,” says co-owner Sara Szymanski who is known as one of Portland’s best forward thinking entrepreneurs. “We’re out there telling the world we’re not afraid to think outside the box and create new and interesting products that appeal to a wider audience. Honestly, the craft beer spread movement probably should have happened years ago, it’s such an intuitive expression of what talented craft brewers are capable of.”
