Widmer Brothers celebrate Hefe Day with brewery reopening & rebrand
Oregon’s oldest brewery celebrates the first in-person Hefe Day in two years this Sunday, May 22, 2022. Widmer Brothers Brewing was founded in 1984 by brothers Rob and Kurt Widmer, their flagship beer and style-defining American Hefeweizen was honored with it’s own official day by the City of Portland in 2016. The 7th annual Hefe Day celebration this year marks the reopening of the brewery for tours and tastings, and as the largest brewery by far in Portland it stands out as one of the most unique tours you can take of a production facility.

Over 35 years ago Widmer founders Kurt and Rob delivered the first keg of Hefe to the Dublin Pub (then on SE Belmont, now located on SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy) it instantly became a surprise hit introducing Americans to German-style wheat beers and becoming one of the first hazy in appearance beers on the market. Even after 36 years, Hefe is still acclaimed by the experts, just last week proving it’s quality with a Silver medal at the world’s most prestigious beer competition the World Beer Cup.
To celebrate iconic Hefe’s 30th anniversary in 2016, the City of Portland declared May 15th as Hefe Day to honor the 30th Anniversary of Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen and honoring the Widmer Brothers' contributions to the craft beer landscape. This year’s celebration has been moved a week back due to Covid-related staffing concerns but the excitement surrounding Hefe remains!
Rebrand of Widmer Hefe fresh in 2022
Widmer Brothers Brewing is also revealing its new rebrand in honor of Hefe Day and re-introducing the updated brewery tour program. The Widmer Brothers brand loyalists inspired this rebrand due to their continued support and love for the brand. The rebrand celebrates what the Widmer Brothers started as well as sets the brand up for future success as the long-reigning king of wheat beer.
Tours of the rebranded brewery space will be offered every hour on Hefe Day beginning at 11 am where guests will have the chance to be the first to experience the brand new Widmer Brothers Brewery Tour, sample some upcoming innovation beers, and take home a few gifts so you can enjoy Hefe Day at home.
