Meet the Womxn, Beers, & Ciders of SheBrew 2023

You probably know that the craftspeople that make the beers and ciders we know and love are not all just men, but do you really know the amazing and talented women of the industry? As a beer and cider dedicated webmagazine we like to think we have our finger on the pulse of the industry, but even we are amazed by the incredible diversity of newcomers and veterans participating in this weekends SheBrew beer festival. So we decided to ask the participants of this year’s festival to tell us about themselves, and their beers and ciders in their own words which have been gathered below.

Events like SheBrew are a great way to begin to get acquainted with the northwest’s female-identified craft beer and cidermakers and show them the support needed to continue to expand and broaden the craft beverage family. SheBrew is this Sunday, March 5th at The Redd on Salmon events venue in Portland. The 8th annual festival features over 40 beers and ciders created by female-identified members of the community. 100% of the proceeds from SheBrew benefit the Oregon Brew Crew and the Human Rights Campaign which supports all womxn and the LGBTQ

Jamie Le Resche

Jamie Le Resche / Away Days Brewing / Hey, Hi, Hallo! Dunkel

Bio: Jamie is the Assistant Brewer & Taproom Manager at Away Days Brewing. From Tucson to Seattle to Portland, I've been searching for the perfect pint, searching for a place to call home. I've followed my heart in a million different directions, but I've finally found my home-away-from-home at Away Days Brewing. I'm not the only one. We have the best community of regulars & friends from all over who call this place home. I fill many roles in our small space, managing the taproom and working as the assistant brewer, and have been fortunate enough to train for a year now with our knowledgeable head brewer, Marshall. Our owners, Niki & Pete, support me every day both professionally and personally. These people are not just my co-workers, but my family. Being able to have a hand in the beer from its creation to its service gives me so much joy. It's not just the beer, though; it's the incredible people who make it with passion, and drink it with happy appreciation at the end (or beginning, or middle) of a long day. I'm almost always at the brewery- come see me sometime & share your stories over a pint of cask!

Beer: For the festival, I wanted to brew a style we hadn't done yet at Away Days but that still fit in with our focus- sessionable & European. My beer is called Hey, Hi, Hallo! Dunkel. It's a Munich-style dunkel lager with rich malt character bringing notes of bread crust, caramel, & malted cereal. At 4.9% ABV, it's both easy and encouraged to have more than one.

Danielle Redman

Danielle Redman / Reuben’s Brews / Run the Whirl

Bio: Danielle Redman has been in the brewing industry for nearly 6 years. After graduating with a Fermentation Science degree from Oregon State University, she joined Hopworks Urban Brewery in 2017, starting on the packaging line and working up to Production Manager. In 2021, Danielle moved to Seattle for her current role as Head Brewer of Reuben's Brews. She has a fondness for Wee Heavy beers and Northwest IPAs and dreams of having a Scottish Terrier. This is Danielle's fourth year participating in the SheBrew Festival.

Beer: Run the Whirl is a balanced pale ale, featuring crisp pilsner malt and a splash of crystal malt. With Cashmere, Amarillo, and Mosaic hops, this beer whirls in with hints of orange, melon, and berry. Brewed by the women of Reuben's Brews, Run the Whirl hits at 5.7% and 35 IBUs and is sure to quench your thirst.

Gracie Nelson

Gracie Nelson / SteepleJack Brewing / I Think I Misunderstood The Assignment

Bio: Fermentation is magic, and so are plants. I like making beer because it combines both and puts history and nature into a time capsule with so many applications. I am the research and development brewer at Steeplejack and I oversee operations at our Church pub. My specialties are wildcrafted, grassroots, and historical beers. I like working with foraged ingredients, being creative, and making people laugh! Come find me for a piggy back ride if you are ever having a bad day :)

Beer: I Think I Misunderstood The Assignment is amber in color, this farmhouse ale made from Admirnal Malt received heather tips in the whirlpool and 35 lbs of honey on day two of fermentation. Lightly dry hopped with Yakima Chiefs experimental hop 472 and fermented on Kolsch yeast, this beer evokes memories of long lost brewing practices, and highlights the clean profile of kolsch yeast.

Jennifer Gregory

Jennifer Gregory / Dragon's Gate Brewery / Rains of Castamere

Bio: My husband and I opened our small farmhouse brewery in late 2011, focusing on Belgian-style ales. Having my first Belgian beer in 2002 while living in So Cal, I was sold on this style of beer. From that point on, it was a quest to create Dragon's Gate. Traveling to Belgium, befriending brewers, and moving back to eastern Oregon helped make this dream a reality. While my husband likes to brew Belgian beers more true to style, I enjoy crossing the boundaries a bit to see what mad concoction I can create.

Beer: 'Rains of Castamere' is a Belgian cherry ale that was inspired by my latest trip to Belgium visiting the Ardennes region to Brasserie d’Achouffe. Taking a Belgian Strong ale and adding luscious, dark red cherries seemed beyond delicious. Minimal hops were added, as this beer is more focused on the fruit & malt. 8%abv / 12 IBU

Anna Buxton

Anna Buxton / SteepleJack Brewing / London Porter

Bio: Anna Buxton, Head Brewer, Steeplejack Brewing, I specialize in English Ilse tradition brewing, historical brewing techniques, and low alcohol brewing. I am forever thankful for the folks out there who are excited to drink small brown beers, and design beer specifically for those who want to have a few without rocking their pallet or getting too loaded. Cheers

Beer: London Porter, 5.4%, Tasting notes:Fresh Coffee / Nougat / Milk Chocolate, Description: Soft and sweet, this English-style porter has notes of fresh drip coffee, milk chocolate, nougat and hazelnut. Deeper Dive: This London porter is modeled after Fuller's London Porter which is distinctly West London (Chiswick Specifically-- very posh) style, which is classically smooth, creamy, chocolatey with restrained but notable bitterness and a fresh coffee aroma. We used HBC 472, a newer experimental hop (open pollinated neomexicanus, from YCH) that has a distinctly barrel/vanilla/whiskey-like aroma along with cascade from our buddies at Indie. There's a low nougat creamy note that I am really excited about, as well as classic nutty brown malt flavor.

Karen Sheley

Karen Sheley / Gateway Brewing+Great Notion / Kolache

Bio: Karen Sheley (Gateway Brewing, favorite style Czech dark lager) Having been in the industry a bit now on the supply chain side, it’s fun to look at how far we’ve come and how fast.  It’s kinda geeky cool (in my own mind) to say I knew Citra when she was X-114. I love that now it’s OK to brew lagers in cans – sacrilege to brew them (too Big Beer) and infeasible to can them (no small canning lines) just a few years back. Alongside those craft lagers, we’re revisiting traditional styles and inventing new ones. And we can do that, and so much more, because all those adjacent industries have grown up alongside the breweries: mobile canners, small run label printers, niche ingredient suppliers, direct to consumer sales, etc.  For sure, the last few years have tested us all, but it’s still a fun time to be in Oregon beer.

Beer: Kolache (Koláče) from Gateway (Karen Sheley) and Great Notion (Lara Hargrave) – Named for the pastry of the same name, Kolache is a Czech-Tex pastry stout with pecans, brown sugar and a dusting of white poppy seed. Czech immigrants brought kolache (koláče) with them to Texas and generations since have made it their own and stretched its definition to include savory flavors like sausages and jalapenos. Our beer leans on traditional sweet kolache rather than the savory Texan version. Maybe next year we’ll try the Texas version….  We checked in with two kolache bakeries for expertise and inspiration: Kolacheria (@kolacherie) in Prague and Happy Sparrow (@happysparrowcafe) in Lake Oswego. Both were psyched to hear about our beer and about SheBrew.

Morgan Clark

Morgan Clark / Trap Door Brewing / Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice

Bio: I moved here from Idaho to fallow my passion in brewing. I worked at a microbrewery during Covid. I have always known I wanted to work in the brewing industry I just was not sure where. I really fell in love with it and decided I wanted to learn more and go bigger. I have a lot of ideas for the future and hope I can motivate more women to join this industry.

Beer: My beer name is sugar, spice, and everything nice. It is a witbier. It's inspired by the power puff girls. This was my ultimate favorite cartoon when I was little(still is) it's all about girl power and I thought that fit well with shebrew. I love a good witbier and I wanted to add cardamom and hibiscus to help with the flavors I wanted to add. The hibiscus helps with the pink color and the floral notes that I wanted. The cardamom helps with the spice part that i wanted.

Lara Hargrave / Great Notion Brewing / Marshmallows Not Included

Bio: I am originally from Dallas, tx where I started in packaging at Community Beer Co. I moved to Portland in 2019 and have been with Great Notion since.

Beer: My beer is called “Marshmallows not included”. It’s a Traditional Dry Irish Stout. I used Marris Otter, flaked barley, roasted barley and a touch of chocolate Rye. It has a simple hop addition of East Kent Goldings.

Kaylen Gibbens

Kaylen Gibbens / Widmer Brothers Brewing / You Oatta Know

Bio: My journey in brewing began as a career change, when I decided that going back to college as an adult was a good idea. I totally embraced the awkwardness and got a degree in Food Science and Fermentation from Oregon State. I started at Widmer back in 2018 and have grown my career there and now manage the brewing department as the Assistant Brewmaster. Along the way, as the number of women increased in all of production, including brewers, I realized how passionate I am about mentoring and supporting women in this industry. It’s so exciting and satisfying to know that this year we have so many women involved that we made two beers! A special and deserved thank you goes out to my amazing SheBrew team whose engagement and enthusiasm that have already made this year’s fest my favorite I’ve participated in yet.

Beer: One of our beers is called ‘You Oatta Know’ and it’s a German-style Pilsner coming in at an easy-drinking ABV of 4.4% We wanted to do a Pilsner, as we all love drinking them, but we wanted to do a little bit of a unique spin on it. We added a little bit of roasted golden oat malt to the recipe, which gives the beer a light toasty/nutty note. To round out the flavor profile, we decided on using Imperial Yeast’s seasonal Hygge lager strain, which gave the beer a beautiful complementary ester profile. Overall, we’re really happy with how it turned out!

Susannah Thiel

Susannah Thiel / Widmer Brothers Brewing / Rosemary, Queen of Kolsch

Bio: I started homebrewing about 6 years ago.  I love brewing beer, wine, and cider, and especially love brewing with the bounty of free foraged fruits, herbs, and hops available right here in town.  I started brewing professionally about a year ago.  It's been great to balance a professional focus on quality and consistency with my homebrew practice of experimentation and one-of-a-kind brews. In addition to brewing professionally, I also currently help run a community-supported homebrewing nonprofit where we teach people how to brew beer, cider, kombucha, and more.

Beer: For our Widmer She-Brew this year, we adapted one of my favorite personal homebrew recipes to make Rosemary, Queen of Kolsch.  I was inspired by the flavor of fresh rosemary focaccia, the bready maltiness of the kolsch complimented by the fresh herbal aroma of rosemary.  I am very pleased that we were able to use fresh foraged rosemary for this brew, and I am delighted by the delicate flavor.

Cason Wolcott

Cason Wolcott / Baerlic Brewing / Golden Girls

Bio: Hi, I'm Cason Wolcott and I like to party. I enjoy long walks on the beach and reading a good book in front of a fire with my dogs. But mostly with a beer in my hand. Oh I should mention I like cheesy dating app bios... I enjoy making beer, drinking beer, cheers-ing beer and proving that anyone, ladies especially can do anything with beer, and do it well. So lets drink to that!

Beer: This is a golden ale named Golden Girls!! Its full of citrus and floral aromas made with Golden Promise malt and hopped with Cascade and Lorien hops. Some lovely Baerlic ladies helped me brew this very easy drinking 4.9%, 35IBU beer. I enjoy making beers that are very drinkable, refreshing, and quaffable! I hope it hits everyone's lovely taste buds and they think "wow, I could go for another!" Cheers!!

Sonia Marie Leikam (left) and Jess Hardie

Sonia Marie Leikam / Leikam Brewing / Kind of Big Peel

Bio: Sonia Marie Leikam is the proprietress at Leikam Brewing in SE Portland which was established in 2014 right outside her kitchen window. Obsessed with cats, mother to 3 humans; she spends her days giving back to the community and running the brewery. The current President of the Oregon Brewers Guild, she loves the craft beer community and aims to strengthen it by diversifying its makers and consumers.

Beer: Kind of Big Peel Kosher American Wheat with Cara Cara Orange

Jess Hardie

Jess Hardie & Rachel Andrus / Oregon City Brewing / More Than a Badass IPA

Bio: Jess Hardie (CG level 7 human brewer/gamer) is an Assistant Brewer at Oregon City Brewing, and is the Co-founder and Head Brewer of TPK Brewing Co., coming to SE Portland in 2023. She can be found on Instagram, spamming pictures of her two golden retrievers, and in her free time she's an avid tabletop role-player, best known for bringing the same touch of chaos and spice to her stories as can be found in her beers.

Beer: More Than a Badass IPA 6.5% /40 IBU Kölsch-IPA Hybrid

Fruit forward IPA dry hopped with this years hand-selected Pink Boots blend of hops. Rachael Andrus (Oregon City Brewing taproom manager) and I wanted to wanted to create refreshing beer that would highlight the fruity/ floral aspect of the blend. We landed on an IPA utilising a Kölsch yeast to play up the hop flavor and bitterness, while creating crisp, clean finish.

Lindsay McIntosh

Lindsay McIntosh-Tolle / Moonshrimp Brewing / Midnight Snack

Bio: Honest story, I fell for a biochemist who became a brewer, and we decided to have an adventure and start a brewery. Being a part of SheBrew and this amazing community of women in brewing got me inspired to move beyond primarily working behind the scenes and start designing my own beers. I have gotten really into making fruit forward beers and love to play with interesting hop combinations. To me the best compliment is that something tastes unique (as long as it also tastes good, of course!). When I’m not working with Moonshrimp, you are likely to find me find me working on projects to make trails and the outdoors more accessible to all.

Beer: Midnight Snack. Style: Black ale with blackberries (gluten free) ABV: 5.5%

Everything we make at Moonshrimp Brewing is 100% gluten and oat free, made with a millet base. For this beer I aimed to find an interesting balance between the sharpness and sweetness of the millet and blackberries with the complex flavor of the Ekuanot hops (one of my personal favorites). Going with a black ale, rather than an IPA provided the opportunity to build some deeper complexity into the flavor profile. I hope you enjoy!

Katherine Gooding and the Pink Boots Socity brew day crew

Katherine Gooding / Flying Bike Co-Op Brewery / Blood Moon

Bio: Katherine Gooding is a Portland born PNW native brewing in Seattle since 2008. Now the Assistant Brewer at Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery, her journey to professional brewing started with becoming a BJCP judge and winning medals in homebrew competitions. She earned the Queen of Beer title and a scholarship to Siebel Institute of Technology in 2019. Fate provided the opportunity to start brewing professionally in 2021. She was a leader of Rat City Homebrewers and still is a homebrew evangelist at Sound Homebrew Supply. When not making, drinking, or talking about beer she is making photographs, cooking, and hanging out with her dog.

Beer: Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery has a strong tradition of participating in the Pink Boots Collaboration Brew. Katherine and the co-op member-owners collaborated to design, make, and name Blood Moon: A Hazy Blood Orange IPA. With 84lbs of Oregon Fruit's Blood Orange Puree, it brings back memories hanging out at the mall with friends and slurping an Orange Julius®. Reallyorangey, juicy, somewhat tropical, and a touch of bitterness in the finish.Made with the 6th Annual 2022 Pink Boots Hop blend featuringLoral®, Ekuanot® , and HBC 586 .

Lily Hulsman

Lily Hulsman / 10 Barrel Brewing / Sabrina Morningstar Belgian Pale

Bio: Started homebrewing during the pandemic just for fun and then took a beer science class senior year of college and since I didn’t have a job lined up after graduation, figured I’d apply to ForeLand and they hired me. And turns out I really liked it. Took a short hiatus to divemaster in the Caribbean this fall and winter and when I got home, knew I wanted to get back into brewing. Landed at 10Barrel with Maddy! Grateful for cool bosses and good beer!

Beer: Sabrina Morningstar Belgian Pale (more info below)

Madeleine McCarthy

Madeleine McCarthy / 10 Barrel Brewing / Sabrina Morningstar Belgian Pale

Bio: Madeleine McCarthy (aka Maddy or Mads) Innovation Brewmaster at 10 Barrel- Portland: This will be my 5th year participating in SheBrew, and it is hands-down one of my favorite beer festivals.  My entrance into the Portland beer scene began as a tour bus driver for Brewvana in 2016.  From there, I started to network with some of the most badass babes- Lee (Hedgemon), Whitney (Burnside), Natalie (Baldwin),  Lisa (Allen), Cat (Wiest), Kelsey (Cable), Angie (Watkins), Lauren (Yap), Marie (Kusa)-  who have been a glittering beacon of support throughout my whirlwind of a journey in this industry.  I am so incredibly stoked to share the spotlight this year with my new Assistant Brewer- Lily Hulsman.  You can find both of us nerding out on rustic farmhouse ales, beautifully delicate mixed culture beer, thoughtfully crafted lagers, and marine biology.

Beer: Sabrina Morningstar Belgian Pale

Maddy: Last May/June I was fortunate enough to study different brewing practices over in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany through a scholarship I received from the Pink Boots Society.  While I was there, I rekindled my love for Duvel.  We spent a day in the brewery, and it quickly became a goal of mine to brew my version of the devil's elixir.  After months of researching, emailing and interviewing, Sabrina Morningstar was born. Sabrina Morningstar- Belgian Pale.  8.7% abv.  All hail the Daughter of Chaos and the Queen of Hell, Sabrina.  Pink Peppercorn phenolics meld harmoniously with soft esters of white peach and pear.  Sneakily strong.  Dry and effervescent.

Mo Lewis

Mo Lewis / Swift Cider / Yummy Bear

Bio: My name is Monelle Lewis but I go by Mo. No one who knows me calls me Monelle. Outside of the cellar you can find me on a roller coaster, playing minigolf or at the arcade. Basically out having fun. Two truths and a lie: 1. I didn't have my first drink until my 21st birthday  2. I find Calculus relaxing 3. I refer to myself as The Cider Princess.

Cider: Yummy Bear. This is a semi-sweet cider that is reminiscent of gummy bears. This tasty treat was inspired by the little kid in me who would eat gummy bears for dinner if she could.

Lisa Allen

Lisa Allen / Heater Allen Brewing / L.I.S.A.

Bio: Lisa Allen came to be a brewer via the wine industry, but is no stranger to craft beer. A native Oregonian, Lisa grew up in a family of homebrewers and craft beer enthusiasts. In 2007 her father, Rick Allen, started Heater Allen Brewing, concentrating on German and Czech-style lager beers. Lisa joined the brewery in late 2009 and started as many brewers do: cleaning kegs. Lisa took over the “head brewer” role from Rick at the beginning of 2017 and she now runs the day-to-day operations at the brewery. When Lisa isn't at the brewery she enjoys cuddling with her dogs Iggy and Mosey, visiting new places, practicing embroidery, and drinking lager beer with her partner and fellow brewer, Kevin Davey.

Beer: L.I.S.A. (Lager Is Super Awesome) Hoppy Export. A 5.4% Export-strength Helles, L.I.S.A. is hopped with one of my favorite "new" German hops, Hallertau Blanc, which is a touch fruity with nice floral noble characteristics. This beer has a tropical fruit aroma with a clean, crisp flavor and slight bitter finish. Super drinkable and delicious.

Whitney Burnside

Whitney Burnside / Grand Fir Brewing / Ulmo Honey Kolsch

Bio: I got my start in the brewing industry after attending culinary school at Johnson and Wales University with an internship at Laurelwood Brewing in 2009. After this I spent some time brewing at a handful of PNW breweries including Upright, Elysian, Pelican and 10 Barrel. In November 2022, my husband Doug Adams and I  opened Grand Fir Brewing together in the Buckman neighborhood of SE Portland where we focus on pairing my beer with Doug’s food in an intimate cozy atmosphere. My beers range from classic style ales and lager to culinary inspired beers that reflect my time spent as a cook and baker.

Beer: Ulmo Honey Kolsch is a German kolsch brewed with a specialty honey that comes from the Ulmo tree grown in Patagonia. Ulmo kolsch presents itself with a delicate yet intoxicating aroma and flavor of floral honey which was added at the end of the boil.  The first time I smelled and tasted this, honey, I knew I wanted to put it into a kolsch due to its already subtle honey like quality it has. 5.2% abv 20 IBU

Teryn Zirk

Teryn Zirk / Migration Brewing / Salty Mule Gose

Bio: My name is Teryn Zirk and I currently am a production brewer at Migration Brewing. I have been a long time connoisseur of craft beer and when my son was a baby, I started homebrewing. I fell in love with the science of fermentation and wanted to learn more. After a long career in veterinary, I decided to switch gears and got a packaging job at pFriem in 2019. While working there, I completed the online Brewing concise course with Siebel. After two years of a very long commute, I decided to look for something closer and ended up getting a job at Migration as a canning operator. After about 6 months, I started training in the cellar then about 6 months after that I started training on the brewdeck.

Beer: My offering to the She Brew fest is a Salty Mule Gose. This idea came after some of our lovely ladies at Migration were wanting to do a gose style and one of them mentioned a cocktail inspired. After playing around with some flavor ideas, we decided upon a mule inspired. This beer was brewed with a base of pilsner malt and white wheat, lacto fermented and then we added salt, hibiscus, lime and ginger. We hope you enjoy!

Lindsey Repp and Kayla Burns

Lindsey Repp and Kayla Burns / McMenamins Edgefield / Prism Traveller / Million Dollar $tash

Lindsey has been brewing with McMenamins Edgefield since she graduated from Oregon State University in 2019. This will be her 3rd year participating in SheBrew but this time she paired up with Kayla Burns, the newest brewer at Edgefield. Kayla has been working with McMenamins serving and managing at multiple pubs for the past 6 years and has made her way up to the brewery world.

Beer: This year for SheBrew, this badass duo collaborated on 2 beers! One is the Prism Traveler, a rainbow sherbet inspired Sour, and the other is the Million Dollar $tash, a pistachio flavored cream ale. Come check them out, we can't wait to see everyone at the fest!

Gloria Zeiger

Gloria Zeiger / Ground Breaker Brewing / Carrot Cake Cream Ale

Bio: As a person with Celiac Disease, I thought that I would always be unable to participate in beer culture. I attended University of California Davis, where I studied Winemaking. I actually skipped my courses on beer because of my Celiac. When I started at Ground Breaker Brewing, I had zero experience with beer. Through the pandemic, I continued my learning in beer and hops. I am grateful for the team at Ground Breaker for all the knowledge and development they have helped me with. In my free time, I take my two dogs on long hikes with my husband and create lots of art.

Beer: My beer is Carrot Cake Cream Ale. This is a naturally gluten free beer. My original inspiration for this beer was a carrot wine that I made in 2020. The malted rice and millet was picked to add a brown cake character, along with a generous spice addition to the kettle. Purple Carrot was added as a fruit addition. Finally, a Lactic Acid addition helps give a cream cheese character. The ABV is 5.5%. I wanted to bring a unique beer to the gluten free community.

Emileigh Jo Valle

Emileigh Jo Valle / Ex Novo Brewing / A Pils of their Own

Bio: I have been in the Portland beer scene for about 6 years now. I moved here from the south to get into the beer industry and started my journey here as a beer and wine buyer. I have dabbled in a few wine harvests and realized I love working with raw ingredients and decided to explore what working in a brewery was like. I started as a cellar person at Baerlic and worked my way up onto the brew stand and learned so much from those folks. Now as a brewer at Ex Novo I have taken a lot of pride in making lagers and improving cellar operations daily. Outside of my work I enjoy camping, going to Blazer games, and hanging with my pup.

Beer: “A Pils of their own” is an Italian Pilsner dry hopped with Vista and Tettenning hops. I love lagers and I am stoked on the Vista Hop. Tasting Notes:Lemongrass, herbal, cracker, peach rings. Specs: Pilsner Malt, Tett, Mittelfruh, and Vista hops, Augustiner yeast, 4.5% 35 IBU. Will be available at both pubs and canned March 7th.

Sara Szymanski

Sara Szymanski / Threshold Brewing / Plum Decision

Bio: As co-owner and communications lead of Threshold Brewing, I've always been able to talk my way around a brew day fairly convincingly. Last year I decided to put my words to the test and brewed solo for the first time on our 10-barrel system for the 2022 SheBrew Fest. Well, let's be honest, solo with a dash of supervision. But I think that's the beauty of any brewer's story, they all start somewhere! While I don't have plans to take over Threshold brewing operations any time soon, I absolutely love the process and privilege of devising a recipe and creating something delicious to share. My return to the mash tun for SheBrew '23 was a blast and I hope you enjoy my fermented take on a favorite Polish treat of mine: chocolate-covered plums.

Beer: Plum Decision - Tart chocolate-dipped plum ale, a dessert-inspired sweet and tangy treat. 6% ABV. A thing about me: I'm obsessed with chocolate-covered plums. I have strong opinions about them. You see them in Poland a lot, which is where my husband is from. My brew day for SheBrew was scheduled shortly after returning home from a trip to Poland and those tart little nuggets were at the top of my mind. We (Threshold) have brewed fruited/chocolate inspired light ales in the past with some fun results so I decided to go for it! Plum Decision is a kettle-soured ale with a Pilsner and wheat-based grist, with purple plums added during primary fermentation and cocoa on the cold side. Both flavors come through beautifully and its light tartness and body really carry the whole thing. I'm very happy with how it turned out and honored to offer it alongside so many experienced women brewers here in Portland for SheBrew.

Caroline Basis

Caroline Basis / Culmination Brewing / Hips Don’t Lie

Bio: I'm Caroline. Funky, spicy beer drinker extraordinaire with punk rock tendencies (trying my best here.. I'm weird). The short and sweet version of my brewing career follows the adventures of a plant-loving homebrewer that soon becomes.. uh oh.. waist-deep in fermentation projects and corrupted by big dreams! Impassioned, I got to thinking, "Hey, why the hell not?" and started applying for industry gigs. Fast forward. A mere two years has passed since my breaking into the industry and I'm delighted at the number of mistakes I have yet to make and the many triumphs along the way. Can't wait! Always learning. Always corrupted.. beer in hand.

Beer: Hips Don't Lie, 5% ABV. Red Wheat Ale with rose hips, sweet orange peel and pink peppercorns. A
dark, roasty-toasty take on a classic Witbier.

Maddie Landers, Desiree Sanchez and Colette Becker

Maddie, Desiree, Colette / Ecliptic Brewing / Titania Watermelon Lime Cream Ale

Ecliptic Brewing opens up SheBrew to anyone from the Cosmic Team that would like to participate! This year’s crew of superhero ladies includes Maddie Landers, Desiree Sanchez and Colette Becker.

Maddie: Marketing Coordinator, handling all things social media! She’s been on the Cosmic Team for nearly 3.5 years following work in real estate. She has loved being immersed in all of the creativity and community that the craft beer world has to offer.

Desiree: Restaurant General Manager, creating an incredible pub experience for their guests! Desi has been with the company for 4.5 years after having started as a supervisor.

Colette: Ecliptic’s Marketing Manager, making sure the brewery’s branding is on point! She’s been with the company for almost 4 years after a long stint in the specialty food industry. She loves how craft beer brings people together.

Beer: Titania Watermelon Lime Cream Ale i created by the ladies of Ecliptic's SheBrew Team, Titania Watermelon Lime Cream Ale features pale malt and a good dose of oats and corn, creating a silky smooth beer. El Dorado and Cashmere hops blend perfectly with a splash of watermelon and zesty lime, and a sprinkle of glitter ties it all together for a sparkly finish. 5.2% ABV

Titania, featured both in Shakespeare's writing and Marvel comics, is a strong and powerful female antihero and queen of the fairies- one of our reasons for adding glitter in this beer! This name ties also into our space theme, as Titania is Uranus' largest moon.

Jen Kent

Jen Kent / McMenamins Thompson / Junco Juniper Cold IPA

Bio: I can be the quiet one in the corner, sipping on a beer and people watching, or I can be one that has a strong voice and is in the middle of all the busy stuff. Just depends on the day. I'm artsy and easily struggle with words, but once you hang out with me you will see my deep love of the craft and how I approach my creations. I'm also a brewer who loves crows.

Beer: Junco Juniper Cold IPA 7.74% abv

This Cold IPA is in honor of my Mom, and her enchanting, ocean side garden in South Beach, Oregon. It is full of coastal pines, foxgloves, ferns and Junco birds. In designing the recipe, I wanted to add a unique flavor that would go hand in hand with my vision and a citrus hop profile and chose the Juniper berry. The Juniper sits subtly on the back side of the palate to create a unique play on this style of brew. Raise a pint to all of those beautiful gardens that steal your hearts!

Bella Perez

Bella Perez / pFriem Family Brewers / Vycepni

Bio: Bella Perez is a brewer from Northern California. After completing her BS in Food Science with a brewing emphasis at UC Davis, she worked for breweries throughout California before moving to Hood River in 2021. Bella now works for pFriem Family Brewers as a Brewery Shift Lead, for Dwinell Country Ales as a part-time production employee, and for the UC Davis Extension as a teaching assistant for classes in beer quality. Bella loves beer, gardening, and hiking with her dogs Zahm & Zola.

Beer: Vycepni is a Czech Style Lager brewed in collaboration with beer writer Jeff Alworth. This "little pilsner" of Czechia was brewed with a starting gravity of 10.5 plato and finished with an ABV around 4.4%. Brewed utilizing malt from Admiral Maltings and Lorien from Indie Hops. This humble pale lager is the drink of choice for Czech brewers and pairs perfectly with a festival celebrating the hard working ladies of the Portland brewing scene.

Tonya Cornett

Tonya Cornett / 10 Barrel Brewing / BeeLoved

Bio: I have been in the industry for a very long time. I have developed more beers than I care to count. At times I have executed ideas quickly and at other times I carry a concept around, waiting for inspiration to move me into action.  Last year I attended a Honey Summit which helped to push me into finally pulling the trigger on a honey sour.

Beer: BeeLoved is a Berliner Weiss with the tried and true flavor combination of Chamomile and Honey.  I always learn something from every new concept and this one is no exception. As it turns out, honey is a surprisingly difficult ingredient to work with in beer. Honey choice is incredibly important.  I brewed this beer with a primary focus on the honey allowing the chamomile to compliment, not overpower, the delicate honey flavor.  Balancing the acidity of the Berliner Weisse without completely masking it with sweetness also proved a challenge.  I'm happy to present BeeLoved.  I hope you enjoy its delicate beauty.

Magnolia Murphy

Magnolia Murphy / Von Ebert Brewing / 3 Degree Fever

Bio: I am new to the Brewing industry, and super stoked to have the opportunity to brew an experimental pepper beer with the very talented Becca Linn, and all the great minds at Von Ebert Brewing! Prior to cellaring at Von Ebert, I worked as a teacher in Minneapolis. My love for beer and my background in chemistry made brewing an irresistible career change.

Beer: Our beer, "3 Degree Fever," is inspired by the fruity heat of spicy margaritas-- some of my favorite non-beer beverages. Our ale base is complimented by tangy bright tangerine, a hint of mango, and a subtle heat on the back end that balances the fruitier notes.

Becca Lin

Becca Linn / Von Ebert Brewing / 3 Degree Fever

Bio: My name is Becca, I'm a brewer at Von Ebert Brewing, and this is my second SheBrew.  I absolutely adore this festival and feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it, and to be a part of the industry in general.  I moved to Portland from Walla Walla, WA., where I had been working at a small brewery in the taproom and production.  Getting to join such a dynamic, driven and talented group of women brewers has been one of the greatest parts of moving out to Portland, and also one of the most unexpected.  At every turn, women in the industry have been my champions and my friends, and I love every opportunity to brag about them and how dope everyone is!

Beer:  Tangerine-mango-habanero ale. Inspired by our love of spicy margaritas, this was our first venture into spicy beers so we consulted some of the best adjunct brewers (Dan from Oakshire and Natalie from Wayfinder, formerly Breakside), and decided to add dried habaneros at whirlpool.  And we added tangerine and mango to complement the heat!

Christine Walter (right) and Bauman’s cidermaker Jen (left)

Christine Walter / Bauman’s Cider / You Should Smile More

Bio: Christine started Bauman's Cider in 2015 on her family's farm near Woodburn. After growing and pressing apples her whole life, she was shocked to realize that they could be fermented into something fabulous. Now she is fermenting everything she can: apples, pears, peaches, berries, grapes...with an amazing team of nerdy scientists and lovers of trees, blending one great cider after another. Come out to the farm for a tour, a pint, and even a conversation with a goat.

Cider: For SheBrew, Christine and her cider maker Jen blended their estate base cider with fresh ginger and pureed mangoes. "You Should Smile More" is a statement about non-conformity and personal agency. Cheers!

Cider: Take a trip to the islands with this Hawaiian-inspired cider bursting with juicy, tart pineapples, a hint of vanilla, and fresh sweetness. The brainchild of cider cellar hand, Kayla Zavala, played upon her chef background to experiment with lots of different flavors and fruits. All the ladies of Portland Cider then got together to blend, taste test, and come up with something special. 6.2 % ABV.
