A Little Vice in downtown Vancouver
It’s been just under a year since Vice Beer came onto the scene with its nostalgia-soaked branding and creative array of IPAs (hazy, cold, West Coast), fruited sours, and traditional and less-traditional lagers. Now, the east Vancouver brewery owned by Bria Perozzo and Michael Perozzo along with Cameron Johnson and Erica Johnson is making big moves with a new satellite taproom right in downtown Vancouver on the corner of Main St. and 7th.
The slimmed down space - aptly named A Little Vice - is brimming with 80s and 90s nostalgia and kitsch, including a Britney Spears cutout (sporting a Friends-themed Vice t-shirt no less) and an 5-CD player that actually works. Nostalgia is a hot commodity these days, but much of the memorabilia comes from Michael Perozzo’s personal collection. The personal touch goes even deeper, as the narrow space occupies the former office of ZZEPPELIN, the marketing agency he also runs. The bar is just big enough for a handful of people to squeeze in, supplemented by table seating in a side room and sidewalk seating that is ideal for taking in downtown Vancouver’s increasingly bustling sights.
Though the savvy branding pulls in many, the real star of the show at A Little Vice is the beer. Across the twelve taps, Vice - which brews in the former Barlows space - veers from trendy options like their flagship Breakfast Club mimosa sour, a peach cobbler smoothie beer and cold IPA, to traditional fare like the Millie 11° Czech pilsner poured from a side-pull tap and an ESB collaboration with Anderson Valley, a brewery close to Perozzo’s heart. From the start, the philosophy of Vice has been to capture both ends of the beer spectrum to ultimately make for an experience that is welcoming to all kinds of drinkers and is fun. Just like their original taproom, beers are served on floppy disc coasters for that added retro touch.
If you’re looking for food, the taproom has a loose partnership with Slow Fox Chili Parlor, the Midwestern-style joint that is literally next door.
All of this is a big step not just for Vice Beer, but for the downtown Vancouver beer scene that sees newer additions like Brothers Cascadia’s Evergreen Pub and Ruse’s Crust Collective joining the likes of Loowit, Heathen, Trap Door, Doomsday and more.
