Old Stove Brewing opens Ballard brewery in former Lagunitas Brewing location
The new Old Stove Gardens feautures a BBQ menu, an expansive beer garden, and a production brewery.
Seattle, Washington’s Pike Place Market based Old Stove Brewing has joined the Ballard neighborhood beer scene, opening a new brewpub at the former Lagunitas Brewing location at 1550 NW 49th Street. This marks the third location of Old Stove Brewing (fourth, if you count two different taprooms in Pike Place Market), and the new “Old Stove Gardens” officially soft opened to the public on Saturday, September 23rd, yet there is still much of the expansive project that needs to be finished.
When fully finished, the 16,500 square-foot Old Stove Gardens building will offer an expansive outdoor beer garden, full-service taproom with BBQ-themed menu and a 12,000 SF production facility for its popular packaged and wholesale products.
“We originally were attracted to the space so we could quickly build out a production facility to meet our growth needs,” said Chris Moore, co-founder of Old Stove Brewing. “Then we started imagining what could be done with the large outdoor space and the Old Stove Gardens concept was born. We have quickly transformed an asphalt heatsink into a lush outdoor beer garden featuring seven large trees and many garden amenities. Soon the perimeter of the property on 49th Street will be ringed with historic lighted outdoor beer signs, primarily from the Midwest,” Moore adds, making a nod to his Michigan upbringing.
Old Stove has hired popular Seattle barbecue chef Darrell Sawyer to lead its “barbeque-centric’ menu that will include barbecue staples such as ribs, brisket, pulled pork and sausages. To start, Old Stove will offer pickup window service while the indoor, full-service taproom renovation nears completion.
Troy Kilburn will serve as the general manager. Kilburn will manage a staff of 11 people.
To start, Old Stove Gardens hours will be 4 to 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 to 10 p.m. Saturdays (with food service starting at 3 p.m.) and Noon to 6 p.m. Sundays. Children are welcome in the outdoor space as are dogs. Aside from food and Old Stove beer, Old Stove Gardens will also offer cider, wine and cocktails.
“The outdoor courtyard is going to be a central element to the Gardens,” said Brian Stan, co-founder of Old Stove Brewing, and a 20-year resident of Ballard. “With covered seating areas, plenty of room to move and dedicated live music space, we think the Gardens space will be a popular draw.”
The production facility is nearing completion and will produce Old Stove’s higher volume labels. Scott Barron is head brewer of the Gardens. He was former head brewer at Old Stove’s Pike Place location.
“We continue to focus on our Pike Place and Ship Canal locations – two amazing spots - but we are excited to expand around Seattle,” Stan added. “Regardless of which location you choose, we invite you to enjoy some Old Stove and some fun!”
