Oregon Breweries with Rooftop Patios
Oregon is rife with beer gardens for such a famously wet state, but with the reopening of Migration Brewing Rooftop at the Canvas, we started thinking about what other Oregon breweries take it a step further and have rooftop patios. We came up with four great spaces, many of them relatively recent additions for elevated drinking. And while there are a few other great second level establishments like Ferment Brewing in Hood River, Sky High Brewing in Corvallis, or Fort George in Astoria, these were the only true rooftop patios we could come up with. Can you think of any we missed?
Migration Brewing Rooftop at the Canvas
1750 SW Yamhill Street, Portland, OR 97205
Unlike the other rooftop spots on this list, Migration Brewing’s is purely a seasonal rooftop only location with no ground level and at the highest elevation of all of them from a 9th floor penthouse. A pandemic pivoted creation, the Rooftop at Canvas Bar is a late spring through mid-fall seasonal destination in Urban Renaissance Group’s tower at SW 18th and Yamhill. Many things make this location special, from the incredible views of the Portland skyline from downtown Portland to Mt. Rainier and St. Helens to the southwest hills, to the just barely out of sight look down upon the open roofed Providence Park soccer stadium.
From a 2,000 sq. ft. penthouse, Migration Rooftop has a small glassed in bar and indoor seating that opens into gorgeous outdoor views that some might even get a little vertigo from. If you look down you can watch the crowds line up to see Portland Timbers and Thorns games at the stadium just across the street, and you can even catch the 101st Timbers Army on the westside stands and see the green or red smoke rise when the home team scores, but not quite down to the field. Its a popular location for good weather days, and before games and concerts when it can get busy and then empty out just as quickly.
The Rooftop at Canvas has seating capacity for approximately 75 people and will be operating through September. Beer, wine, cider and canned cocktails will be served (no minors allowed). This year will also feature personal pizzas and small snacks.
Backwoods Brewing Hillsboro
206 E Main St, Hillsboro, OR 97123
Originally founded in Carson, Washington, the Backwoods Brewing Company now has an even greater presence in Oregon with the opening of their second metro-area location in Hillsboro in November 2023. The satellite location and full service bar and restaurant is the anchor tenant of the Main Street Commons development – a revitalization of a large former US Bank building.
Backwoods Brewing takes up the majority of the building, with an outpost of Grand Central Bakery, and a new Ranch Pizza location (which replaced original tenant Sizzle Pie) and they all share access to a 3,000 square foot rooftop bar. The spacious deck has a full service bar with Backwoods beer and cocktails, and a separate window and sectioned area for events or private parties. From the nearly wrap-around view you can get excellent views of downtown Hillsboro along SE 2nd and E. Main Street including the Giant Sequoia Heritage Tree Site.
Cascade Lakes Brewing on Reed Market

One of Oregon’s oldest breweries keeps finding ways to reinvent themselves. 30-year-old Cascade Lakes Brewing was founded in Bend’s neighboring city Redmond in 1994, but was arguably better known for their Bend lodge location before it closed to make way for the newly constructed Eastside development. Not long before that, Cascade Lakes became a not-for-profit brewery under new ownership that continued to revamp the brewery from the brand identity to reworking beers under Deschutes veteran Ryan Schmiege.
The Cascade Lakes on Reed Market Pub is part of a trend moving development to Bend’s eastside where the bulk of new housing and and space for growth in the increasingly desirable city that is struggling to meet demand. Cascade Lakes Eastside is ostensibly the new flagship location for the brewery, a 5,000 square feet pub with two bars — one downstairs and another on the pub’s rooftop, with 16 taps downstairs and 10 at the rooftop bar. This is Bend’s first and only full-service rooftop bar, with panoramic views of the seven peaks of the Central Cascades to the sides, and below a view to a plaza and ground level beer garden. With a roll-up half garage door, heaters, patio seating, and TVs, Cascade Lakes hopes the rooftop will be a popular hangout all year long. And guests will be able to order Cascade Lakes’ entire range of beers, cocktails, and a specialized food menu curated by Chef Jeff Kelly.
10 Barrel Brewing Portland
1411 NW Flanders St, Portland, OR 97209
Shortly after expanding to Portland, the Bend, OR based 10 Barrel Brewing added a rooftop bar to the NW PDX Pearl District brewpub. This location was already special to the 10 Barrel Brewing brand, as it market their first foray outside of their hometown and the addition of a new brewery and chance to bring in more top brewing talent. It got off to an excellent start with the hire of head brewer Whitney Burnside, at the time an alumni of Pelican Brewing, Elysian Brewing, and Upright Brewing. After years of making excellent award-winning beers under 10 Barrel’s parent company Anheuser-Busch, Burnside left to open Grand Fir Brewing and 10 Barrel was sold to Tilray Beverages.
Now under the Tilray Brands banner, 10 Barrel Brewing is once again considered “craft beer” again by the independent industry trade organization the Brewers Association. They also named new 10 Barrel Portland head brewer Brandon Whalen to lead the team, and Whalen comes with brewing chops from his time at Breakside Brewery where he helped craft beers from the most award-winning brewery in Oregon.
The 10 Barrel Brewing Portland location has an 1,800 sf rooftop addition with a full-sized bar serving cocktails and 20 beers on tap, with a full food menu of staples like pizza, burgers, and those over-the-top BBQ chips gorgonzola steak nachos. Construction of the new outdoor space occurred above their operating restaurant and included the addition of two staircases for roof access. The deck now provides seating for an additional 85 people and is open year-round. Originally a seasonal only feature, the rooftop is now partially enclosed and covered for bad weather and opens up to partial views of the skyline, West hills, and Pearl District neighborhood shops and people watching.
