Mt. Angel Abbey’s Benedictine Brewery and Coleman Hops celebrate kickoff of Oregon hop harvest

Oregon’s only Monk made beers at Benedictine Brewery by Mt. Angel Abbey are celebrating 50 years of partnership with Coleman Agriculture and the brewery’s 8th anniversary. On Friday, August 8th, the monks will host the release of a new collaboration beer with Coleman Hops and mark the kickoff of the Oregon Hop harvest at the Benedictine Brewery (400 Humpert Ln, Mt. Angel, OR )

The Mt. Angel Abbey sits on a hill above the town of Mt. Angel near Woodburn and Salem, for decades the monks have partnered with Coleman Agriculture to farm parts of their land for hops. In 2018 Mt. Angel Abbey opened their own on-site brewery and taproom near the base of the Abbey and just across the road from hop fields.

The celebration will begin with a blessing from Father Martin, followed by the release of Anniversary HAUSTUS, a Belgian Pale Ale brewed with 100% Simcoe® hops grown on Abbey land. This special-edition beer honors a half-century of collaboration between the Benedictine monks of Mount Angel Abbey/AFO and the Coleman family, who have farmed and stewarded the land together since 1975. Anniversary HAUSTUS will be available for purchase on draft, and a limited quantity of bottles will be for sale.

Coleman Hops will also be on hand with hop samples grown at Mount Angel, offering guests the opportunity to see and smell the raw ingredients that bring this beer to life. “The monks’ values of stewardship and community align beautifully with our sustainable approaches to farming,” said Ivy Hover of Coleman Agriculture. “This beer is a heartfelt expression of what is crafted when people work together with care and purpose.”

In addition to the beer release, the event also serves as a kick-off to Oregon’s hop harvest, expected to begin on or around August 19.
