Still hot off the success of their second location in Milwaukie celebrating its first anniversary, pFriem Family Brewers looks to open a third location in Portland proper at 2216 SE 50th Ave, Portland, OR 97215.
Unlike their original taproom/restaurant/brewery on Hood River, Oregon’s waterfront, and their second location in downtown Milwaukie’s restored historic old city hall, the proposed pFriem Portland is a smaller neighborhood joint. Situated halfway between Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and Division near Lincoln Street on 50th, the lot was redeveloped from residential to become the Hinterland bar and food trucks that first opened in January 2022.
Hinterland was created by food and drink hospitality veterans Ryan Schenk and Rowan Dunlap. Unlike many of the areas other food truck pods, Hinterland has always been centered around the peaked brick-and-mortar building rather than the food trucks and lot itself.
Out front the covered patio allows for elevated neighborhood people watching year-round with heaters and a counter bar ordering window. The bar portion is full service with liquor and 12 taps. Indoors, a tiny front room for seating, and a larger back room, opening up into another more secluded back patio that is insulated in winter, each space with televisions to host games and small events. In total the new satellite location will seat about 30 people comfortably indoors, and another 92 people seated outdoors
Hinterland sits slightly lifted above street level like the other homes a long 50th. They host 5 food trucks running east up a long driveway that stretches from the sidewalk to behind the building. The original Matt’s BBQ Tacos truck is located here, a long with Thai Panther, Pizza Machine, Hunker Down, and Indian Spice Kart . No word yet on if the food trucks will remain at this location if/when it becomes a pFriem satellite location, but the New School has reached out to the owners of Hinterland and a few of the truck owners and will update if we hear back.
pFriem Family Brewers (pronounced "freem") is a Northwest and European-inspired brewery founded in 2012 in Hood River. As one of Oregon’s most successful and award-winning breweries, pFriem is still growing and recently catapulted into the Brewers Association’s list of the largest small and independent craft breweries in the U.S. At the recent 2025 Great American Beer Festival, pFriem collected a gold medal for their Italian Pilsner, and a bronze medal for Mosaic + Krush Cryo West Coast IPA in the most competitive pro beer competition in America. pFriem now operates out of both the Hood River brewhouse, as well as a production, packaging, barrel-aging, and distro facility in Cascade Locks, and the full service restaurant and bar in Milwaukie. pFriem distributes throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California and remains deeply rooted in its local community.
pFriem Family Brewers has applied for the same business current days/hours as Hinterland (Monday through Friday from 11am - 10pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9am - 10pm), though that could change.
