First look at Spotlight Brewing and Hollywood Q food hall

Oregon’s newest brewery has opened their doors in the former Pono Brewing Beer Labs, Columbia River Brewing, and original Laurelwood Brewing location at 4035 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, OR 97212. Spotlight Brewing comes from the folks behind Zoiglhaus Brewing but is very much its own thing with its own brewhouse run by brewer Kevin Hanny creating his own original recipes.

Spotlight Brewing opens in the larger concept Hollywood Q, a food hall with stalls for 10 different micro restaurant setups that wrap around from the Spotlight entrance on NE 40th to behind neighboring restaurant Sushi Chiyo and with a back/side entrance on NE Sandy boulevard.

Spotlight Brewing and Hollywood Q are capitalizing on the combined efforts of the iconic Hollywood Theater and cult video store Movie Madness’ plans to create a Portland Film district within the Hollywood neighborhood of northeast Portland. Part of the new Hollywood Q development includes second level offices and work suites and on the opposite corner of the block an adjacent building will be the new home of Movie Madness. At their new location, Movie Madness will have more than 40% more space for additional film props and memorabilia and the best collection of videos for rent in the state, as well as a 45-seat state-of-the-art auditorium equipped for both digital and 16 mm projection and a lounge.

Spotlight Brewing’s head brewer is Kevin Hanny, whose experience started with washing kegs at Migration Brewing to to moving up to their pub brewer R & D role managing the beers at their original NE Glisan brewpub. After that, Kevin went to SW Washington to become the head brewer for Trap Door Brewing. More recently Hanny was at SteepleJack Brewing for nearly 4 years where lead production in Hillsboro. Kevin is now brewing at Zoiglhaus Brewing and immersing himself in the culture of the new parent company which includes Ponderosa Brewing in New Mexico, and local Zoiglhaus spinoff brands like Cerveceria Norte, and Ascendant Beer Co.

Hanny is looking forward to getting back into a pub brewer setting where he can be amongst the drinkers and community and really get a sense of what they desire. The smaller 7-barrel brew house at Spotlight Brewing will be ran entirely by Hanny, with most of the beers sold on-site with a little bit of production in 12oz cans and limited draft available via Maletis Beverage. The brewhouse is a classic copper clad system that dates back to the original Laurelwood Brewing but was upgraded when Pono Brewing briefly operated here. Brewing on-site has not yet taken place however, as the system still sat for over a year and needed a good cleaning and updated parts and glycol.

Spotlight Brewing does have a handful of their own beers on tap that were brewed either at Zoiglhaus Brewing by Hanny, or at other local breweries in new collaborations. This includes three different Spotlight beers already in cans that represent the house crowd-pleaser pub basics: American-style Lager, West Coast IPA, and Puppy Pilsner (with a portion of all proceeds going to the Oregon Humane Society.)

The rest of the current Taplist features beer like Spotlight Brewing’s ‘Title Sequence’ Hazy IPA, ‘Opening Night Gitters’ a Zoiglhaus Brewing collaboration pale ale, ‘Valihund’ Baltic Porter collaboration with Gigantic Brewing, ‘American Wheat Ale’ collaboration with Level Beer, and ‘Modern Special Effect’ a West Coast IPA collaboration with Threshold Brewing. Theree are also additional guest beers on tap as well as Bauman’s Loganberry Cider, and N/A option Happy Mountain Kombucha.

Spotlight Brewing operates their own small kitchen with enough crowd-pleasing hot pub food items to fulfill the requirements to serve a full bar menu of hard liquor and cocktails. This includes a bacon cheeseburger, a vegan impossible burger, hot dogs, wings, fries, and a salad.
