First Look at StormBreaker Brewing St. Johns

Portland's Stormbreaker Brewing will open its second location in the St. Johns neighborhood this Wednesday, May 16th, with a soft "Parade" opening this Saturday. Stormbreaker opened just four years ago on N. Misssissippi Ave. and expands upon that pub's successful elements at the new location located at 8409 N. Lombard St. The St. Johns pub is more spacious with a full kitchen, full bar, and a covered outdoor patio, and eventually host another brewhouse.Stormbreaker Brewing St. Johns is on the corner of N. John and Lombard in the former Plew's Brews and St. Johns Dentist Office in the heart of the downtown area. Stormbreaker owners Dan Malech and Rob Lutz has demo'd the space almost completely to combine the two buildings, knocking down a wall or two to create a high ceilinged, beautifully bright and wooden brewpub that's had St. Johns denizens buzzing and peering through the windows since the project was announced. All of the wood work--including the tabletops, booths, and much more (sans bartop and barstools)--was salvaged from the building's high rafters and walls, with much of the work done by the owners themselves. Dan Malech could teach a class on sourcing decor and supplies. Examples: bad celebrity portrait sketches in the hallway to the bathroom and kitchen that he found on etsy. Old St. Johns historic photos he found from a local webstore. A vintage poster of a boxing match held in the same building they now occupy from a local collector. Pipes and light fixtures he had hand wired at Hippo Hardware. It's those details and more, like the hand-carved beer hall benches outside with the bright sunny mural by artist Chris Bigalke, that make Stormbreaker St. Johns sure to be an instant hit.The bar has 20 draft lines and on opening day will have 15 Stormbreaker beers on tap, plus a collaboration with Laurelwood Brewing called Extra Special Buddies and guest cider. Stormbreaker is currently working on collaborations with Migration, Baerlic, and Grains of Wrath that will round out the taps in the near future. For the gluten-free, the pub will carry Omission and pour from a full bar with whiskey and spirit pairings, a cocktail menu, and a few wine selections.
The new Stormbreaker St. Johns has tons of space even behind the scenes, with room for a new larger brewhouse to come in the following years. Even more, the guys have visions of permanent axe throwing lanes in the back of the building.Stormbreaker Brewing St. Johns will have a special Parade Preview this Saturday from 11am-10pm in honor of the St. Johns Parade. They will be operating on a limited menu and staff for the day which is posted above.Stormbreaker St. Johns officially opens on Wednesday, May 16th at 11am. Their hour going forward are 11am-10pm Sun.-Mon, and 11am-11pm Tues.-Thurs. and 11am-12am Fri.-Sat. Minors are allowed every day until 8pm.StormBreaker St. Johns 8409 N Lombard Portland, Oregon 97203
