Binary Brewing Takes Over from Uptown Market

Uptown Market Brewing is no more; we now have Binary Brewing. After recent major upgrades during a closure for remodeling, the original Uptown Market beer bar, bottleshop, and homebrew supply shop recently reopened. In early 2013 the company had opened a brewing side of the business and after careful consideration has decided to start that program anew with different beers and a total restart of the brand and beers.According to a statement from the brewery, they have decided to become Binary Brewing:

The Portland area has a long history of beer and technology. Our team brings together experience in both so we chose a name that reflects those two roots. Our goal is to bring start-up excitement back to the craft beer market – developing new beers and revitalizing classic styles for modern tastes. Regular “beta beer” projects on tap at Uptown Market give our customers direct input into our efforts. We love collaborations with other breweries and amateurs alike to spread the excitement and skills beyond our own walls.

I spoke with new Uptown Market managing partner Josh Johnson who is overseeing the transition, on how Binary Brewing was any different than the previous brewery other than in name."It is a clean break from the past." Says Johnson, "While the three of us have been running it as Uptown for the last 3 months, this new brewery allows us to create our brewery out of the foundation we believe is important. "

What that actually means as far as the beer goes is a new brewing staff and refocus on classic beer styles. The Head Brewer is now Roger Wood, a 15 year homebrew veteran and 30+ years in the software security field. Conor Quinn is a brewer with experience at Lompoc Brewing and Portland Brewing. Josh Johnson has 10+ years experience in managment in the brew pub and hospitality business.

Johnson continues, "Uptown tried to do everything and did nothing very well.  We are now focused on creating quality malt focused beer with a nod to our past."
Binary Brewing officially launched last week for Portltand Beer Week but is just really starting to get off the ground. Their "Beta" lineup of beers are posted below.

Binary Beers

8 Bitte Helles
5%ABV
This shiny golden helles is clean and crisp. Mild and maltyhoney-sweetness and a cracker snap finish gives way to herbal and noble hop spices. Clean yeast allows the malts and hops to glow in balanced harmony. This sunny ale is fermented and conditioned cool, making it both refreshing and crushable.
Rag Top Summer IPA
6.3% ABV
What do you do if you are pining for a nice, resinous, NW IPA but you’re slammed by summer heat? Get yourself a Ragtop and sit out on the deck! This is an IPA to quench your thirst and make you want to grab another.
Diving Catch Shandy
4.4% ABV
Bursting with lemon this shandy tip toes the line between tart and sweet. A slight hint of hops is quickly balanced with its perfect malt bill.
RE:bar English Pale
5.8% ABV
Crisp balanced pale ale that leans more towards its British origins than modern hoppy pales. Floral in the aroma and flavor with a hint of honey and biscuit. In true Oregon fashion, its strong enough to make the rainy days better, but light enough to brighten any sunny day.
CTRL-ALT-DEL Stout
6.2% ABV
Our take on a classic dry Irish Stout. A soft and silky mouthfeel with decedent notes of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, oak and coffee. Distinctively dark with a thick white head that lasts, this stout stands out; with full indulgent flavor for the colder months and a medium body and dry finish to satisfy thirst when days are warmer. It's time to log off and have a pint!
