2019 Best of Craft Beer Awards Winners By The Numbers

Last weekend the Best of Craft Beer Awards were judged at Bachelor Village Resort in Bend, OR and the 2019 winners have now been announced. The Best of Craft Beer Awards are one of the fastest growing U.S. professional craft beer competitions with over 2,000 entries this year, 80 or so judges (including myself and many other professional brewers, homebrewers, and trained judges) awarded 262 medals in 90 categories.As usual Portland's Breakside Brewery did extremely well as did Bend-based 10 Barrel Brewing but there were also many surprises, including a new top Gold medal winner for American-style IPA that was very unexpected. 33 different states won medals at the 2019 Best of Craft Beer Awards. Not suprisingly, Oregon dominated with 79 medals  (up from 70 in 2018). Washington came in second with 29 medals (up from 28), and California with 26 (up from 20). Read the full list of winners here.

One of the surprise big wins was Oregon's Ordnance Brewing winning the Gold in American-style IPA for their EOD double IPA. It may have been a real smart move to enter this light bodied double IPA in the traditional single IPA category. It's a terrific beer, (I judged it myself) and may warrant a revisit, I wonder if Ordnance's new head brewer Paul Anderson has done any reformulation on the recipe?
