First look inside Ancestry Brewing's new Hawthorne Location
We first broke the news that Tualatin, Oregon-based Ancestry Brewing was opening a Portland location on southeast Hawthorne boulevard in April. Just two months later, Ancestry Brewing is set to soft open to the public under a temporary license on weekends starting this Friday and Saturday, June 14th and 15th from noon - 10pm.
Ancestry Brewing is an unusual successful brewery, unusual in that they make a lot of old school and currently unpopular British Ales and they don't do much marketing. Ancestry does have one of the few full service brewpub options in the Tualatin-area, clear bold branding, hearty down home pub food, and classic ales that people used to enjoy in the 90's that you don't find as much in the city. Though, to be fair they also make hazy IPA and other beers of the moment.
Ancestry Brewing Hawthorne has a lot to like, it's slicker, more stylish and loungey than their Tualatin and Sellwood locations, owing to the former tenant Chapel Hill Pub. This fairly spacious, medium-sized taproom seats around 85 inside and probably the same amount on their great backyard beer garden. The new spot also has a much larger kitchen than other locations and a hell of a lot more taps, there will be 56. But, only about 27 will be pouring right off the bat, it's unclear if Ancestry Brewing would even be able to fill the full possible output of draft lines. We may see more draft cold brew, kombucha and cider filling out 20ish lines of Ancestry. The alcohol options will be strictly beer and cider, no hard liquor, but plenty of coffee next door.
Ancestry Brewing has struck up a partnership with Sydney, Australia-based Campos Coffee to operate a cafe/coffee shop in the corner space of the pub, their first in the U.S. Campos Coffee cafe is open from 6am to 2pm, serving coffee, tea, pastries and soon even a breakfast menu from the Ancestry kitchen, (though the two businesses operate separately.
The entire Ancestry Hawthorne brewpub is in a new multi-level, mixed use development with apartments above the tavern and a shared backyard patio. This beer garden area is the hidden ace in the hole of the space, large enough for a crowd, a great spot to get some sun while the indoors offers darkened respite from it.
This taproom also features a larger kitchen then Ancestry's other two locations, and thus an expanded menu of burgers, grilled sandwiches, wings, roasted chicken and other American pub grub classics And yes, it's a kid friendly establishment with minors until 9, a kids menu and even crayons and activity sheets. With a handful of TV's and a projection screen, Ancestry Hawthorne aims to please a wide crowd, from local sports fan to families and neighborhood imbibers.
Ancestry Brewing PDX is at 4380 SE Hawthorne Boulevard and is open this Friday and Saturday, June 7th and 8th from noon - 10pm and next weekend the 14-16th.
