Gateway Brewing and Threshold Brewing release Pumpernickel Rye Lager
Gateway Brewing and Threshold Brewing and Blending are two of Portland's most outer eastside breweries. The friendly camaraderie between the two and both's involvement in the Pink Boots Society, have lead to a collaboration called Pumpernickel Rye Lager. This dark, lightly spicy, nutty lager has light cocoa notes with the signature crisp body and sessionable abv you might expect. This collaboration is part of the Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day and uses the 2020 Yakima Chief Pink Boots hop blend with a percentage of sales benefiting the Pink Boots Society. (Both breweries offer home beer delivery!)
Pumpernickel Rye Lager is brewed with the YCH Pink Boots Blend with Azacca, El Dorado, Idaho Gem, and Loral hops that give a tropical, citrus and piney aromas paired with experimental rye malt Gateway selected from Great Western Malt.

“When Teri Farhrendorf, Great Western Malting’s Malt Innovation Center manager and Pink Boots founder, asked us to try this new malt, we played around with a number of ideas for how to use it.” said Gateway head brewer and co-owner Joel Sheley. “We kept coming back to the idea of the rich, earthy, heartiness of rye bread and since dark beers styles really interest us, Pumpernickel Rye brought that together. And with Terri starting the conversation, using the Pink Boots Hops blend for collaboration brew day just made sense.”
Pumpernickel Rye Lager is available for pick-up and delivery in 16 oz cans from Gateway (gatewaybrewingpdx.com) and in 32 oz crowlers from Threshold (threshold.beer.) 50 liter and 1/6 bbl kegs are also available for sale from Gateway Brewing.
