Stammtisch German Gastropub reopens with new Festhalle Annex

Stammtisch gastropub has been closed since June but has reopened for dine-in with an expansion into the adjacent space.

German beer and food lovers are probably already familiar with Stammtisch, the gastropub from Dan Hart of the famed Prost! northwest pubs. Hart and his partners operate Interurban Tavern, Prost!, Bloodbuzz and Bantam Tavern, all of which are among Portland's best public houses. But it's Stammtisch that offers the most extensive beer list and extensive menu of German fare for those interested in experiencing a taste of Bavaria.

A vocal proponent of pub culture, and both craft beer and German imports, Hart has been outspoken about the COVID-19 issues that the industry is facing today. Anxious to get back to business safely, Hart opened his five Portland bars when Multnomah County was given permission to enter phase 1 on June 19th. Though the reopening has been smooth, issues unrelated to the virus temporarily shut down Interurban and Stammtisch just days after resuming on-premise service.

A sewer main burst below Stammtisch on June 27th forcing the immediate closure of the pub after only a week reopened. After working for 6 weeks to repair it, Stammtisch was finally able to resume business on August 10th with an additional recently vacated space called the Festhalle.

When their building neighbors Association Studio boutique vacated their space behind the bar at the end of July, Stammtisch began moving in. With no tenants lined up to take over the side street retail space, the building owner offered it as a bit of relief for the loss of Stammtisch's bar seating due to social distancing restrictions.

Hart had long considered the Association Studio space as a potential new cocktail bar or private dining space for special events or the semi-regular German beer dinners that Stammtisch once held pre-pandemic. But for now the area has been rechristened as the BeerHalle Annex with an additional five tables that are appropriately separated. The Festhalle will be a valuable expansion during the fall and winter when outdoor seating is not available and every extra table counts. As it is now, the expansion space is temporary.

To enter the beer hall, check-in through the main pub doors at the corner of NE 28th and Flanders to be seated for table service.
