John’s Marketplace collaborates with Fremont Brewing on Mexican-style Coffee Stout

This week Portland, Oregon’s famed bottleshop John’s Marketplace celebrates 22 years in business with an exclusive collaboration beer from Fremont Brewing Co. Party Like - is a Mexican-Style Coffee Stout that packs a punch, this small batch beer was brewed in Seattle just for John’s two locations in SW Portland’s Multnomah Village and their new beer mecca on SE Powell Blvd.

“John’s Market has been a great partner to Fremont Brewing for years, so when Paul Petros, Co-Owner of John’s Marketplace, asked us if we would be interested in collaborating on a special one-of-a-kind beer to celebrate their anniversary, we, of course, said yes,” said Matt Lincecum, Co-Founder, and Brewer of Fremont Brewing.

Founded in 1999, Johns Marketplace went from neighborhood grocery store to beer haven over the course of many years and changing ownership. Brothers Rob and Paul Petros were determined to continue that legacy of beer destination when they took the reigns of the operation in 2016. The brothers took the opportunity to expand and improve the original location adding a bar and deli, and in July 2020 opened their enormous second location on SE Powell Blvd. Taking over a renovated and rebuilt restaurant, the Johns Powell location has a full taproom, enclosed patio, a super popular beer garden and food cart pod, and one of the best selections of beer in the country.

Both of the Petros brothers are big dark beer and Stout fans, as well as longtime admirers of Seattle, Washington’s Fremont Brewing so the choice of collaboration beer was easy. Johns Marketplace’s other Paul, aka bar manager and buyer Pauly Miller reached out to Fremont Brewing to see if they would be interested.

“The style I believe stemmed from Paul's love of the Dark Star. That beer is a favorite of his and holds a special place in his heart, so the base beer was set to be a Fremont imperial stout. From there we talked of using filberts or maybe an affogato, but the brewers worked their magic and hit it out with a Mexican chocolate theme. The chiles were for Rob,” says Paul Petros. “The Fremont crew was as wonderful as ever and thought it would be fun.”

Inspired by Mexican hot chocolate combined with coffee, Party Like is a 10% ABV, Mexican-Style Coffee Stout that was brewed with Roaster’s Choice whole bean coffee from Seattle’s legendary, Lighthouse Roasters, whole ancho chiles, and cinnamon.  The combination of coffee, chiles, and cinnamon creates a complex and rich stout with hints of coffee, chocolate, and spice, with just a touch of heat and bitterness; Party Like touches the whole palate and finishes smooth. A portion of Party Like was put into bourbon barrels to age for an expected barrel-aged version to be released in 2022.

“So far we haven't done much to celebrate due to various circumstances,” added Rob Petros. It will have been exactly 5 years since they took over operations on June 6th, 2021 and the Party Like release is a nice way for them to celebrate if they cannot have large in-person events in the next few months. “We hope to have the Covid down enough to be able to host more folks, but it may not pan out. The beer release is a nice low key way to say "We did it, thanks to all you beer lovers, so this is our gift to you."“
