First look at John's Marketplace Powell Blvd. - Opening Today

John's Marketplace opens their new southeast Portland location to the public today at 3550 SE Powell Blvd. John's has been one of the longest running bottle shops in Oregon based on their single location in southwest Portland's Multnomah Village neighborhood. But with John's Marketplace's move into inner southeast Portland, they enter the epicenter of Oregon's craft beer scene with a bright and open bottle shop and bar with a selection competitive with the best in the world.

John's Marketplace was first founded in 1999, but over various owners it underwent it's own phases of reopening before establishing itself as one of the premiere craft beer destinations. John's has stayed a major player in the craft beer scene, sponsoring their own beer festivals and those of others, and keeping an enviable selection of vintage beers and imports alongside local craft.

Current owners and brothers Rob Petros and Paul Petros took over in 2016 and have integrated the marketplace into the community even further. John's SE Powell takes over from the late lamented Original Taco House and becomes the anchor tenant in a redeveloped shopping center with an enviable amount of parking and central location. At a recent industry soft opening, one distributor representative remarked it was like a Whole Foods of beer as we stood admiring the strangely wide selection of Polish and Eastern Block beers.

John's Market SE Powell has a vast selection of nearly 3,500 different beers, more than 100+ ciders, and 1,200 wines. Like their O.G. location, John's has aisle upon aisle of mainstream and obscure bottles, but even more cold storage and an expanded corner for European and american snacks and non-alcoholic options. There is even 3 cooler doors of hard seltzer if that's your thing.

Taking a cue from their successful addition of an actual bar area at the Multnomah Village store in 2017, the SE Powell store features a large bar-area along the eastern wall of the store with 12 taps and 4 more outside. While they have space and a selection for many more taps, the Petros wish to keep a smaller number for more frequent rotation.

The marketplace beer garden and food cart pod is a central draw of the new John's. Through a doorway at the back end of the bar, customers can exit to an enclosed but narrow patio along the side of the building, through another door in the fence is an exit/entrance to the Powell Center Food Trucks pod. With seven different food trucks to choose from, John's does not need to provide their own food as it would be difficult to compete with the incredible selection outside.

Holy Trinity BBQ is probably the star of the Powell Center trucks, since receiving rave reviews and national press they have been drawing Texas-style BBQ fans in for over a year. The allure of a brand new and central space with an adjacent bottle shop and bar has also drawn in proven popular food trucks from other neighborhoods like Azul Tequila Taqueria (try the Classico steak and relleno burrito) and JoJo's over the top fried chicken and potatoes. The food court's eclectic selection of popular food purveyors and a back beer window from John's could make this a top destination spot.
