Portland’s oldest Cider House is Closing

Portland’s cider scene has been full of ups and downs over the last decade. The first cider bottle shop and taproom in the U.S. Bushwhacker Cider, opened in Portland in 2010 and shut down in 2018. In recent years we’ve seen the closure of Alter Ego Cider, Cider Riot, and Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider, but The Place quickly stepped in to fill the vacuum that Bushwhacker left, and we have amazing new locations of Bauman’s Cider, Schilling Cider House, and the new Alchemy Cider. Through the ups and downs one cider house has stood the rest of time until today, northwest Portland’s Cider Bite taproom is calling it quits.

After just celebrating their milestone 10th anniversary last month, Portland’s oldest remaining cider house will officially close its doors on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

Cider Bite opened on August 1, 2015, with a mission to bring the best and most diverse selection of  ciders to Portland. With 32 taps, Cider Bite proudly offered one of the largest draft cider selections available anywhere with rotating new varieties weekly and introducing customers to the wide  range of flavors and styles cider has to offer.

“Over the past decade, Cider Bite has been honored to host community events including tap takeovers, meet-the-maker nights, new cider releases, and launch parties for cideries like Bauman’s,  Locust, Incline, and Bad Granny,” says Cider Bite owner Jeff Hanneson.

For years, Cider Bite presented the Portland Cider Summit, was the  most popular stop on the Portland Walking Tours, and proudly sponsored the Rose City Futsal NWF  Women’s Champions League and the Cider Rite of Spring.

The decision to close did not come lightly.

“Like many small businesses, we have faced  unprecedented challenges over the past few years—from COVID restrictions, multiple break-ins, and  incidents of vandalism, to dramatically rising operating costs and a significant decline in tourism and  downtown foot traffic that has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Our beloved city has struggled to  regain its vibrancy and to overcome the barrage of negative national media coverage and public perceptions of safety. With our lease set to expire at the end of October and the landlord requiring higher rent and expenses under a long-term agreement, we were unable to secure an acceptable and  sustainable extension that would allow us to continue,” says Hanneson.

“After a lot of conversations and heartfelt reflection, we are deeply saddened to share that Cider Bite  will be closing. It has truly been an honor to serve Portland for a decade, and to  be part of the greater cider community. We are immensely grateful to every customer, team member,  and supporter who has been part of our journey.”

Cider Bite’s last day of service will be Sunday, October 19, 2025. They invite you to stop in during these final weeks to bid farewell and raise a glass to the memories created at one of the few places to find a wide variety of various cidermakers in town.
