Bear Poop Beer from Columbia Sportswear and Breakside Brewing
Columbia Sportswear is Making Mother Nature’s Crap Easier to Swallow with Bear Poop Beer
Working with Breakside Brewery, Columbia gives football fans a taste of the outdoors while they are indoors watching the Big Game
Just when current events can’t get more surreal, Columbia Sportswear and Breakside Brewery announce a “bear poop beer.” In an announcement that seems like a throwback to the anything-and-everything-goes craft beer boom period of the early to mid-aughts, the Breakside x Columbia “Nature Calls” craft lager is a truly one-of-a-kind beer ahead of the Big Game that tastes a little like shit in the best possible way - if that is a thing…
To give sports fans a real taste of the outdoors, the Columbia and Breakside brands are one-upping the craft beer world with Breakside’s newest clean-tasting lager, “Nature Calls.” Then comes the twist: a real ingredient from the wild - bear poop – infused in the water used in the brewing process. The Breakside collaboration marks the latest chapter in Columbia’s ‘Engineered for Whatever’ platform, turning nature’s most unexpected byproducts into a frosty adult beverage.
Mother Nature throws plenty at outdoor adventurers – from icy sleet to biting bugs – and Columbia doesn’t just embrace that; it engineers for it. "Nature Calls" takes that promise to the extreme: a beer infused with nature’s most unexpected ingredient, proving Columbia can help you get ready for absolutely anything.
“When we say engineered for whatever, we mean whatever,” said Joe Boyle, Brand President at Columbia Sportswear. “If Mother Nature hurls bear poop at us, we'll ferment it into a frosty pint. From the inside of a bear to your mouth – this beer is the sh*t, and we’re making nature’s crap easier to swallow.”
Crafted by Portland-based Breakside Brewery, “Nature Calls” is a crisp lager born in Columbia’s hometown, made with water from the Bull Run River infused with a hint of bear poop collected trailside in Montana from the American black bear, malted grains grown in the Pacific Northwest, and a touch of honey and huckleberry.
For the first time in company history, Columbia will be taking part in the Big Game as “Nature Calls” will be available at Columbia’s booth during The Players Tailgate in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday, February 8th. Available in limited quantities, the beer will also be available at Breakside Brewery’s locations.
“We’ve brewed a lot of beers, but never one that celebrates nature this literally,” said Scott Lawrence, Founder of Breakside Brewery. “When Columbia came to us with the idea to use bear poop, we thought they were joking. Turns out, they weren’t - and now we’ve got the wildest beer in America and maybe the world. It’s crazy, it's fun, and honestly... it tastes great.”
The idea for this beer was conceived by adam&eve\TBWA, Columbia’s creative agency of record. The beer is 100 percent safe to drink. While the inspiration and several ingredients come from the wild, the beer itself is brewed under the same strict standards as any other Breakside beer.
