Summer Supper foodie festival tackles waste and food insecurity

Portland, Oregon is host to dozens and dozens of food festivals annually, but among the most unique and impactful is Urban Gleaners Summer Supper on Sunday, September 13th - tickets are on sale now.
Summer Supper will feature over a dozen of Portland's most revered chefs, serving dishes made from almost entirely gleaned ingredients, all while raising money to tackle food insecurity in Oregon.
This year also marks the 20th anniversary of Urban Gleaners. For two decades, this non-profit organization has provided the vital, ongoing service of eliminating hunger and food waste in the Portland metro, all while celebrating the amazing food community that defines this city. Urban Gleaners rescues nearly 1.2 million pounds of food from the landfill every year, and distributes nourishing meals to over 8,000 food-insecure families in the Portland metro every week, with no questions asked.
Some of Portland’s brightest stars have participated in the past Summer Suppers, like chefs Bonnie Morales, Tyler Malek, Lalo Camarena, and Urban Gleaners board member Gregory Gourdet. Many are excited to return this year.
“Zero-waste cooking is in my roots,” shared Fatou Ouattara, chef and owner of Akadi PDX, “Growing up in Côte d’Ivoire, with family from Mali and Burkina Faso, nothing good ever went to waste. That’s exactly why we love working with Urban Gleaners: rescuing good food and turning it toward fighting hunger in our community. The event is such a joy from start to finish, and we can’t wait to come back and do it again.”
