Best New Oregon Beer Bars & Taprooms 2021

You may have heard that the “beer bar” is dying. In recent weeks articles in both the New York Times and Wine Enthusiast have pointed to a host of issues facing the small independent non-brewery affiliated taprooms. Those issues range from the pandemic and grocery chain stores to the expansion of brewery satellite locations. Lucky for us Oregonians we are still awash in world-class beer bars, but it’s more important now than ever to support them and the craft beer culture that flourishes because of them.

Each year we do our best to highlight some of the brand new beer bars, taprooms, and just outstanding restaurants, food trucks and pubs that are showcasing beer around the state. This industry and community would not exist without these businesses and breweries, cideries, etc. need them to survive and provide another outlet for their fun, crazy and innovative creations. While the following guide is not entirely complete, we have spent considerable time attempting to highlight the new beer bars that have opened in the pandemic era of 2020-2021.

White Oak Taphouse - Beaverton, OR

White Oak was one of too many bars to have the bad luck in opening only 2 weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing shutdown began. The intimate 50 seat taphouse has endured through the pandemic though, even with limited space they have carved out a space in oak for themselves in Beaverton.

Getting their name from the custom made wood bar, tables and booths made from a single White Oak tree cut from SE Portland and custom crafted from Hood River’s Yodelboy Wood Works. White Oak has strived to be a customer service-focused bar with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere and board games and limited TV’s to occupy the time. . With their 11 bar seats, 6 ADA seats, 2 x 4-person booths and leather couches they cater towards an adults-only crowd interested in sipping from their 22 draft lines; 18 beers, 2 ciders, 1 seltzer and 1 NA option. The taproom is slick, full of polished wood and minimalist bright touches in a space reminiscent of a wine bar or art gallery but with beer as the centerpiece.

Crosscut Warming Hut No. 5 - Bend, OR

Though they first opened in May 2020 the aptly named Crosscut Warming Hut didn’t fully get into gear until this past summer. Opened and managed by longtime Oregon beer industry veteran Alison Wood who worked for Ninkasi and Allegory Brewing, the Crosscut is a 2,300 sq ft beer bar with a huge outdoor area that spreads out for a quarter of an acre.

The Warming Hut itself is just that, an indoor modern log cabin space that not only serves beer, cider and wine from 25 beer taps, with 3 ciders, 8 wines, taps but also plenty of whiskey and other spirits that will heat your belly. A central feature of the interior is a steampunk-esque wood burning stove with surrounding seats, a long communal table seats 16, and there is a snug couch and a separate loft area. But in many ways Crosscut is about that big outdoor space. With a multiple fire pits, picnic tables, yard games, and adirondack chairs, there is tons of space to spread out and enjoy the tree lined campus and woodsy garden with a food cart lot featuring 3 trucks permanently parked: Abe Capanna's serves Detroit style pizza, Gyro Power serves Meditteranean, and Incredibowl serves Thai inspired bowls and some staples like burgers and chicken sandwiches.

The Biere Library - Corvallis, OR

Opened by west coast food and drink pros that hail from Holy Mountain, Erica Baze and Travis Allen The Biere Library is a loving homage to European gastropubs in central downtown Corvallis. Opened in the midst of the pandemic, The Biere Library has a warm and eclectic decor with a modest but carefully curated taplist of local craft beer and Belgian and German imports that are complimented by a sophisticated bottle list. The list is constantly rotating with local hometown favorites like Dirt Road Brewing, Alesong, and Yachats, or rarely seen imports like Chimay Blue and St. Bernardus Tripel on draft. Inside this book lined space is cozy reading chairs, private booths, group tables, and a small bar. Outside they fit 8 pickic tables around the building, and are always kid friendly.

The food menu at The Biere Library is as important as the drinks list, chef and co-owner Travis Allen is turning out hearty and soul warming comfort food like crêpes, boulettes, Tartiflette, and Pot-au-feu. The instantly familiar dishes nod to European classics and are integral in giving the pub a unique Belgian bistro vibe that sets it apart from other taprooms and restaurants in Oregon. In an age where imported beer has fallen by the wayside in Oregon, the Biere Library is a great ode to European pub culture.

Skout Taphouse and Provisions - Ashland, OR

Ashland, OR is an artsy college town with a healthy obsession with beer, even though there are only 2 breweries in town. If you are looking to try a wide selection than there are only a few good places to go, and Skout Taphouse and Provisions is one of them. Formerly an Asian restaurant called Sesame, the ownership took the business in a new direction in April 2021 when they turned it into an open air beer bar concept in downtown Ashland. A big part of the draw is the location along the watershed and in the lively business square across from the Ashland Creek.

Skout has roll-up front facing doors to Lithia Park right next to where walking, running, riding trails come down into town and you can actually play frisbee right outside their doors. The taphouse has a sizeable 75 outdoor seats that provide some great people watching, while another 99 can fit indoors seated and standing. And we can pretty confidently say that Skout has the best draft selection anywhere near them with 60 taps, typically about 40 of them beers, and the other 20 wine, cocktails, kombucha and cider. But they also sport a full bar and kitchen with classic drinks like margarita, bloody mary and a bourbon selection with NW pub style food; fish & chips, brisket sandwich, pretzels, and salad bowls.

13th Moon Gravity Well - Portland, OR

Brewer and fermentista Ari Moss opened his taproom and bottle shop 13th Moon Gravity Well in March 2021. Situated right above the medieval Wyrd mead hall in a historic old Portland building that was famously once the Old Town Crier, the Gravity Well is an equally strange and comforting bit of classic PDX charm.

Ari has worked at numerous homebrew shops and even commercially helped make kombucha, before he went on to bartend for Unicorn Brewing and Portland U-Brew in Sellwood. Soon after he worked his way up to their head brewer and was teaching brewing classes. He launched his own nano beer brand called 13th Moon Brouwerij before landing a home for his own taphouse that shares a similar name. Moss has built an intimate and cozy upstairs pub heavy on rustic wood features and eclectic decorations like vintage bottles from his collection, animal bones, lanterns and a Tardis inspired exit. The bar top, community bar, tables and beams are all from a fallen old growth ponderosa pine and the pub pours 10 beers that always have an import or two on the list, as well as local nanos and established favorites. Bring your own food, but there will be beer, sake, cider all available by the bottle or can to complement the draft list.

Neighbors Taproom - Portland, OR

When longtime Portland nano brewery turned commercial canning operation Natian Brewing announced they would be first closing their brewery, and then their taproom, it didn’t take long for Tia and Kris to step in and keep the neighborhood taproom alive. Both owners lived in the apartment building overhead and ended up working at the Natian taproom before taking over the space from former boss Ian McGuinness. Their goal was to open the space up to local beer and wine and make it inviting and a local hangout.

The open, airy, and glassy window facade is modern with plenty of light, with space for about 60 people inside and another 30 or so on outdoor tables when the weather allows. There is limited bar seating but with plenty of windows and bench seating around the corner windows, bistro tables, two large lounge chairs, and wooden benches sanded and stained. From behind the bar they pour 24 Taps mostly beer and about 3 ciders that are always rotating. You can also find wine on tap, coffee and espresso bar featuring Deadstock Coffee Roasters, a non-alcoholic water kefir from Goodwolf, and a fridge with local wines, beers, ciders and non-alcoholic options.

Neighbors is going for the neighborhood lounge vibe and has broadened out of beer and into showing sports, hosting a book club, showcasing local artists, and other community building activities. In the future Tia and Kris want to host more local vendors, musical artists, and events like weekly DJ’s.

Two Dogs Taphouse - McMinnville, OR

The already beer and wine drenched city of McMinnville may be known most for it’s wineries and breweries like Heater Allen and Golden Valley but it now has a new taphouse and pub called Two Dogs. The spacious building at the corner of NE 3rd and Ford St. is right on the main road going through downtown full of shopping and food and drink, but just before publication we learned that Two Dogs will be relocating in the new year just down the street.

In their current iteration Two Dogs is a very spacious 5,300 sq ft, casual restaurant and beer bar. The family friendly indoors can seat 120 people with a mix of large and small tables, while outdoors they have medium sized tables set up around the building for great McMinnville people watching on the main thoroughfare. The bar has 40 taps with a mix of beer, cider, and hard seltzer, with wine by the glass, and soft drinks, tea, and lemonade for the non-drinkers. A safe but satisfying menu is extensive with burgers, sandwiches, wraps, soup and salads, Mac and cheese, tacos, hummus, beer battered onions, dirty green beans, etc. Two Dogs is a crowd pleaser and hopefully their new space just 2 blocks down the road will be just as great.

Common Fields - Corvallis, OR

Chef and beer connoisseur Jacob Oliver left his job at Block 15 Brewing’s Les Caves beer and kitchen to open up his dream of a taproom and food cart incubator called Common Fields. Located in downtown Corvallis just 2 blocks from his old work, Common Fields has slowly but steadily been renovating and improving on an old gas station using the shop as a family friendly board game lounge and hot sauce retail store while the large outdoor patio became a beer garden and open air dining area. Surrounding the lot are 4 food trucks: Ojisan's Ramen, Terra's Tastee Treats serving BBQ and sweets, ZIA Southwest Cuisine serving Mexican and Oliver’s own Kalamata Bistro serving Mediterranean fusion. Common Fields has already built a reputation for a small but frequently rotating and well curated draft list from Oliver’s favorite breweries and it’s become a hangout for brewers and beer geeks, even hosting beer release parties throughout the pandemic and live music from an outdoor stage on the covered patio.

A new college town taproom and gastropub obsessed with all things fermentation. Community Fermentation Union (CFU) opened in February 2020 for take out and started seating folks inside for the first time in March and by May they were bring their own beer from a small homebrew size pilot system. CFU is a brewpub focused on all kinds of fermented foods and beverages. The kitchen menu is all about the wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza, they bake traditional styles and are mixing it up with specials like a BBQ pulled pork pie, and a vegan Philly cheesesteak style as well. The kitchen doesn’t stop there and delves into soups and sandwiches, house-made dressings, and dessert, basically anything they can feature fresh and seasonal from the farmers market or a local farmer.

Founded by Nicole Nishimura, and brewer Gabriel Yospin, CFU has aspirations to make more of their own in-house brewed beer. Right now they like to show off local beer, cider, and kombucha, and making their own creative and often maltier beers when they can. Yospin takes particular pride in his Scottish Ale with a smooth vanilla and caramel flavor. The bar doesn’t skimp on the drinks, they make craft cocktails and have a full selection of wines. The ultimate goal is to make just about everything from the pizza dough to the beer and pickles in-house. Central Station Taps - Beaverton, OR

Central Station opened Mar 6th, 2020, that was only 10 days until Oregon bars and restaurants were shut down due to COVID-19. March 16th was the same day the beer bars picnic tables showed up and before the state was allowing even outdoor seating. So let’s just safely assume that the next 3 months were a rough start for Central Station, they did not truly open up until June 1st when the state relaxed regulations to allow limited capacity.

The 1190 sq ft. taproom has seats for 50 people indoors at 10 tables and 6 bar stools, with another 7 picnic tables outside along with 6 small two person portable tables. The atmosphere is casual with a moderately family friendly vibe, and a chill atomosphere with TV’s with the sound off, quiet background music to promote conversation, and games to occupy your time as you sip on one of 30 taps, 25 dedicated to beer and 5 for ciders and seltzers. If you have a wine drinker in the group they have bottles, and gluten-free beer, non alcoholic drinks, seltzers, soda and juice by the can or bottle. Though they don’t boast a huge number of taps, the Hood River Common House supplements their 6 draft lines with a wide cross section of bottled and canned beers including many brettanomyces wild yeast ales and a good selection of local wine. Common House is one of the rare bars that takes wine just (if not more) seriously as they do their beer offering a curated experience of refined fermented beverages.

Of the many bonus features that the taproom offers are two different outdoor patios and close proximity to Hood River’s classic 36 years running Mike’s Ice Cream that can be enjoyed at the Common House. On a hot day the Common House has beer floats, like Ecliptic Brewing Porter with Mike’s French Roast Ice Cream, or a cider float with peach sorbet, and in the winter they have been hosting pop-up dinners indoors for vaccinated only. Bit House Collective

Bit House Collective - Portland, OR

Pre-pandemic the Bit House Saloon was an acclaimed cocktail bar serving the grungy club going crowd of inner industrial eastside PDX, but after a pandemic closure it was reborn with new owners and a new vision to showcase local beer as well as mixology. If the charm of this old Portland brick building that reminds you of some sort of Shanghai tunnel set speakeasy isn’t enough, how abut the fact that it functions as a taproom for Pono Brewing’s beers? The Portland based beer brand is mostly available on draft and in cans self-distributed around town, but it’s difficult to find many of their beers in one place until now. Also, the original food menu of Filipino bar food has been replaced by Plant Based Papi which is an all Vegan/vegetarian pop-up that is making waves for their acclaimed Mexican-style tacos, burritos, and fried fish, sandwiches, wraps and burgers. Tomorrow’s Verse - Portland, OR

After losing both Alameda Brewing and beer bar Bottles in the past few years the Beaumont neighborhood and Fremont St. in particular needed a new craft beer haven and Tomorrow’s Verse is it. Add owner TJ Fuller to the list of unfortunate business owners who had the misfortune to open during the pandemic, but just as many of the other businesses on this list he made the most of it.

The pandemic made Tomorrow’s Verse to pivot into more to-go beers to complement their 15 draft selection, it also called to have them put their plan to have regular live music on hold and host webcasts instead. But now that things have opened up more, Fuller is hosting regular live music and has turned to more events and paying extra attention to consumer demand for their curated selection. The locals have also showed up to support and Fuller has made new relationships with small hyper local brewers. The taproom has been decorated for the holidays and outdoor seating is covered in the plaza of the complex they share with other local restaurants and offices like Noho’s Hawaiian Cafe and Red Sauce Pizza next door that provide food options. Tomorrow’s Verse has established itself as much more than a beer bar, it’s a neighborhood hub for curated playlists, concert footage, live concert streams and vinyl selection for vaccinated adults only indoors (kids allowed outside.)
